New Coalition Forms to Support Film, TV and Digital Media Industry

From the Connecticut Production Coalition:

The Connecticut Production Coalition Launches with over 1000 members.

Stamford, CT, January 27, 2009 – The Connecticut Production Coalition (CPC) was formally launched today with more than 1,000 companies and individuals who share a commitment to building a permanent film, television and digital media industry in Connecticut. The coalition will also be undertaking a campaign to urge state policymakers to support the film, TV and digital media tax credits that are fueling job growth and a rapidly expanding industry even amidst a worsening state economy.

“Connecticut is searching for ways to generate jobs, strengthen the economy and lessen its dependence on the crippled financial sector,” said Chris Campbell, Owner of Palace Digital Studio and one of the nineteen founders of CPC. “As one of the few growing industries in the state, film and digital media are key to that effort. This is why we’ve had such an astounding response to the launch of Connecticut Production Coalition.”

In just over two years, 91 film, TV and digital media productions have brought over $600 million in direct investment to Connecticut, resulting in an estimated $1.5 billion in new economic activity. These productions have taken more than 80,000 hotel rooms, paid for permits, rented homes, buildings and parking lots from property owners, spent money at hardware stores, printing shops, coffee shops, restaurants, dry cleaners, lumber yards, car rental agencies and many other businesses, large and small.

“It’s exciting,” said Kevin Segalla, President of Connecticut Film Center and a CPC founder, “This industry has taken root so quickly – it clearly will be an important part of the state’s future economy if it's cultivated by effective and forward-looking state economic development policies.”

On the digital media front, the tax credit has attracted Blue Sky Studios to move to the state, bringing over 300 high paying, high skill technology jobs. And in just the past six months there have been ongoing relocation discussions with a dozen other digital media companies (video games, visual effects, animation, etc.), representing thousands of potential permanent jobs for Connecticut.

“In addition to some major digital media companies eyeing Connecticut, in just the past week, two massive new studios have been announced,” said Segalla. “Not only will these projects bring direct production jobs, they will result in very significant employment in construction and other support industries.”

CPC will hold networking events, distribute quarterly newsletters, and act as an informational clearinghouse for the many individuals and businesses that serve the industry. Members will be able to share job opportunities, find local production resources, and follow the rapid growth of the Industry.

“We’ve gotten a real boost from our work on productions” said Ann Tupper, account manager for Office Furniture Rental Alliance in East Hartford and a new CPC member. “We’re a small business and like everyone else we’re concerned about the current economic mess. Now is the time to be building new industries, and not scaling back on programs that work.”

A. Searle Field, CEO of United Studios of America and a founder of CPC said that the coalition is actively supporting the state legislature’s review of the effectiveness of the tax credit. “There is no doubt that this industry is attracting permanent jobs and that the hundreds of millions of dollars in investment is having a very positive impact on the broader economy. While the film and digital media industry in our state is still young, it is growing rapidly and producing jobs and significant revenue for the state.”

“Thanks to Connecticut’s tax credit program, this industry is growing at break-neck speed,” said Chris Campbell, “It is critically important to keep in mind the positive impact the industry has on all types of businesses across the state.”

"Pawtucket Rising" to Air on PBS

From Nick Delmenico:
The producers of the Pawtucket Film Festival and the City of Pawtucket are excited to announce that a documentary which premiered at last September's Ninth Annual Pawtucket Film Festival will be airing on Rhode Island PBS. "Pawtucket Rising*. In fact, that's the name of the new documentary by local filmmaker Jason Caminiti about the historic city's renaissance. WSBE Rhode Island PBS will air the film on Saturday, January 24 at 7 PM on channel 36,digital 36.1, Dish 7776, DirecTV 36, and on cable channel 8 in RI. Massachusetts cable subscribers should check their cable listings for the localchannel number).

The documentary profiles the birth and evolution of Pawtucket's arts
district through adaptive reuse of empty century-old factory buildings as
an engine of economic revival. What Caminiti found in Pawtucket was a great story with a greater lesson: cities past their manufacturing prime can flourish and grow in new directions - if elected officials sincerely support the effort and collaborate with leaders in the community.

Sign Up Now For One-Day Screenwriting Bootcamp -- only $99.00!

“THE WRITING’S ON THE WALL”

NEWPORT, RI -- Get your writing into shape in 2009 -- for only $99.00! Master Filmmakers, producers of professional film education programming, announces an “Inauguration Special”. On Sunday, February 8, 2009, local writer Krista Weller Burns will present a special condensed version of her 2-day workshop, “The Writing’s On The Wall”, at Kay Studios in East Providence . For only $99.00, you can learn tips and tricks to getting your screenplay off your desk (or laptop) and into the marketplace.

‘“The Writing’s On The Wall”’ is my way of sharing how anyone can develop a story into a workable script. Then we look at what makes a script saleable and how to prepare yours for entrance into the professional marketplace,” says Burns.

On the decision to offer the program as a 1-day workshop, Burns says, “‘Inauguration’ is to mark the beginning of something new. So, in the spirit of the season -- I’ve whittled down the 2-day workshop to 1.”

As an added bonus, students can submit their work for a basic script consultation -- normally a $50.00 value -- of their first 10 pages of a feature or entire short script!

“It’s fun and invigorating -- whether you want to write feature films, shorts, commercials or developing web copy -- I’ve found that this method works across all media”, says Master Filmmakers founder, Eleyne Austen Sharp.

Krista Weller Burns has over ten years experience writing and media training in the corporate, political and non-profit sectors. She has studied screenwriting in Los Angeles and New York from the likes of David Freeman, Michael Hague, Hal Ackerman and Blake Snyder. Locally, she has been published in Newport Life Magazine and has worked as a creative producer/consultant with Breaking Branches Pictures (“41”, “Getting Out of Rhode Island”). As writer/director, she is currently developing the independent short, “New Beginnings”, which is slated to start filming in Rhode Island later this year.

Master Filmmakers is a division of The Film Community, the producers of film education programs for adults and children. The Writing’s On The Wall will be held on Sunday, February 8, 2009 at Kay Studios, 66 Valley Street in East Providence , from 10AM-4PM. Registration is required. PRESS NIGHT SLATED FOR NEW DOCUMENTARY

Critics, reviewers and others are invited to the first press screening of ON THE LAKE: Life and Love in a Distant Place, a documentary movie about the tuberculosis epidemic in America in the 1900s and globally today. The feature-length movie by filmmakers David Bettencourt and G. Wayne Miller will have its world premiere on Feb. 13 at the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket, R.I., and be broadcast on PBS in March.

The press night will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 10,, at the Cable Car Cinema, 204 South Main Street, Providence, R.I.. Bettencourt, Miller and members of the cast and crew will be on hand to answer questions.

ON THE LAKE had three successful test screenings last fall: in Pittsburgh, at Harvard College, and at state-run Zambarano Hospital in Pascoag, R.I., where much of the film is set. Zambarano opened in 1905 as a tuberculosis sanatorium.

Production of ON THE LAKE began in late 2007 at Zambarano, and later took filmmakers to Colorado, North Carolina, Massachusetts, Maryland and New York. The final version has images and reports from overseas. Globally, tuberculosis is the number-two infectious disease killer, after HIV/AIDS.

Even before its release, ON THE LAKE has garnered honors. The film is a member of the Geneva, Switzerland-based worldwide Stop TB Partnership (www.stoptb.org), whose board is run by an executive committee that includes members of the World Health Organization, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the U.S. Agency for International Development.

The film had also been endorsed by the globe’s most prominent fight-TB advocate, Harvard’s Dr. Paul Farmer, subject of Pulitzer prize-winning author Tracy Kidder’s Mountains Beyond Mountains. Farmer said:

“Tuberculosis -- one of humankind's oldest documented illnesses -- has been placed, by some, in the category of 'emerging infectious diseases.' The truth is, TB has never gone away. It has been and remains one of the world's leading infectious killers… I applaud the efforts of Eagle Peak Media and their film 'On The Lake' to tell the human story of the tuberculosis epidemic.”

ON THE LAKE is the first production from Eagle Peak Media, a multi-media company founded in May by Bettencourt, the award-winning director of YOU MUST BE THIS TALL: The Story of Rocky Point Park, and Miller, Providence Journal staff writer and author of seven books. More Eagle Peak documentaries are in pre-production.

Center for Downward Mobility in Comedy Central Contest

From: Kevin Anderton [mailto:midnightchimes@gmail.com]

Our short film, "Center for Downward Mobility", was selected by Comedy Central for their Atom Films showdown contest. If you win you get $500. I talked to the people who run the site. If you do well, they play the short on Comedy Central! Please help us do well, it's very simple!

1. Click on the link below.
http://www.atom.com/showdown/

2. Click either on the name "Center for Downward Mobility" or click
the play triangle in the middle of the video.

You have to watch it the whole way through. It's under 3-minutes. You
can just mute it and go surf elsewhere while it plays in the background.
It's safe for work. Every bit helps so feel free to spread the word.

Please note: If you are a registered ATOM film user, please vote for the
film. Winning would be nice but I'm mostly concerned about doing well
view-wise.
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!

WORCESTER FILMMAKER’S DREAM PROJECT READY TO ROLL

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CONTACT: Kristen Lucas
January 14, 2009 (774) 253-6045

Worcester, MA – After leading a succession of team efforts that resulted in four short movies - including the locally-produced “Third Date” - Worcester screenwriter and producer Kristen Lucas is now laying the groundwork for the filming of her own dream project, the full-length feature “Snowflake.”

Based on a script she wrote while a student in Emerson College’s Screenwriting Certificate Program in 2003, “Snowflake” is the story of Jesse Ashton, a 20-year-old white female rapper trying to transcend barriers of both race and gender as she competes in the gritty urban hip-hop scene.

“Snowflake” ended up taking a back seat to other projects that came Lucas’ way as she learned the ins and outs of film production. Under the banner of Goldilocks Productions, she organized teams to compete twice in the Providence leg of the 48-Hour Film Challenge and once in the National Film Challenge, resulting in two awards. More importantly, Lucas began forging a network of actors, writers, technicians, and crew members that she could draw on for future projects.

“I was lucky to have been able to pull together a great crew and talent on our first 48-Hour film, “Let It All Out,” Lucas explains, “so that when we moved on to other projects I was could call on people like actors Billy Smith [of Showtime’s “Brotherhood”] and Martha Cary [of Comedy Central’s “L’il Bush”], director Jeff Craddock, and a group of very talented writers.”

Many of these team members were called back into action when, thanks to the word-of-mouth generated by her first two 48-Hour films, Worcester native Tom Henrickson enlisted Lucas to help make a shortened 30-minute version of his full-length comedy “Third Date” in the summer of 2007. The resulting film premiered to two packed theaters at the Worcester Showcase North Cinemas and made its Los Angeles debut at the LA Shorts Film Festival in 2008.

While helming all these projects, however, Lucas had one thing in the back of her mind: seeing “Snowflake” on the big screen. Thanks to the network she nurtured and connections made in the local film community, the feature is now set to go in production by the summer and will be shot in and around Worcester. Among the locations scouted to date are the Lucky Dog Music Hall and REHAB Nightclub. Initial casting sessions were held in November at Viewfinder Productions in Boston and Kay Studios in Providence with more to be held soon in Worcester.

True to form, Lucas has begun to assemble another team of dedicated volunteers, friends, and professionals to bring “Snowflake” to life beginning with Worcester natives Amy Devlin, co-producer, and Dan Rosario, program director for The Affected Program and owner of 256 Media, who will be director of photography.

Atlanta actress and breakdancer Katherine “Kat” Slatery, who was most recently seen throughout the world performing in music videos for Soulja Boy and David Archuleta, is slated to take on the title role, while internationally-renowned music video director Dale “Rage” Resteghini is in discussions to direct and/or executive produce the project.

To keep the music authentic, Brooklyn rapper BYATA, best known for her appearance on VH1’s Miss Rap Supreme, is helping to write some of the main character’s lyrics and noted local hip-hop producer Keith “Klep” Napier is the film’s music director overseeing the soundtrack with the help of artists from Worcester and Boston. Actor and writer Kyle Perzanoski, a Goldilocks veteran since “Let It All Out,” will be assisting with the inevitable rewrites as the script nears production.

To help get the project launched, Goldilocks Productions is holding a fundraiser at 7 p.m. on Saturday, January 24, at the OurTvSpace headquarters at 559 Main Street in Sturbridge. The evening will give a good preview of what to expect from the “Snowflake” crew with a live DJ spinning throughout the evening, performances by the groups on the soundtrack including the live debut of “Follow Me” performed by Kat, meet-and-greets with the cast and crew, and a raffle featuring prizes ranging from your own photo shoot to autographed film posters.

In addition, local actors will be able to vie for parts in the film at the audition booth from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Tickets are $25 and information on both the film and fundraiser can be found at www.snowflake-movie.com

A Ccreenwriting Class is Being Offered in Boston at a non-profit for Writers Called "Grub street"

http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://www.grubstreet.org
Screenwriting I
10 Wednesdays in Boston, 7pm-10pm. begins January 14th
Instructor: Mark Fogarty (President of the RIFC)
Contrary to popular opinion, it’s not enough to just “buy a book” and write a compelling screenplay. The best screenplays require discipline and an attention to detail, voice and narrative that works your writing muscles. This course will teach you the fundamentals of screenwriting – and the various structures and “formulas” of the genre – in order to turn your ideas into memorable and marketable scripts and treatments. Open to those new to the genre – including those who’ve taken our
“Screenwriting Primer” or “Screenwriting Made Simple” weekend workshops – as well as those who want an audience for screenplays-in-progress and could use both a review of the basics and some new ideas.

I have a corporate client looking for a magician for a trade show-like event in Foxboro MA on Thursday, January 15, 2008. You would be stationed at a company booth, performing for people who stop by. You'll likely be dressed as a wizard...

If you are interested, please respond to john@betweengigs.com with:

Comment on Town Hall Meeting of January 7, 2009

This comes from:
Mick Hoegen

www.MickHoegen.com
www.SAG.org/iActor/MickHoegen

Hello New England Filmmakers,

Last night at the Columbus Theater in Providence there was a town hall type meeting conducted by RI Film Commisioner Steven Feinberg. It was basically a number of presenters, about 20, talking about their function in the RI film community.

The entire crowd of about 200 people, give or take, were supportive of raising the cap on the RI tax incentives, which is currently frozen at $15,000,000 per year for the total of all productions, not per individual production. So that will cover a lot of $300,000 plus productions, but one big budget Hollywood style production would eat up all the credits for an entire year. Shame on the RI legislators.

Although the message I forwarded previously said it was a production of the RI Film Collaborative it was actually sponsored by the RI Production Coaltion. I suggest you google both to get on their email lists.

Imagine's Newest "Imaginnaires"

This comes from Imagine Publishing:

It's time to get together again to network and celebrate, and to honor our selected peers who have achieved excellence in their work through dedication to our industry.

IMAGINE is pleased to announce the following "Imaginnaires" so called because they are rich in creativity, thoughts and ideas. They are dedicated, insightful, and generous of themselves and their resources, which they use to serve our industry. They are:

Bestor Cram is a writer, shooter, teacher, director, producer and the leader of Northern Light Productions, which he founded in Boston, MA in 1982. The company is celebrating 25 years of total immersion in the Documentary Arts and many mighty accomplishments including going from one film in the incubator to producing 8 major works per year.

Lyda Kuth is the Executive Director of the LEF Foundation. In 2008 LEF awarded $300,000 to 26 Grant and Fellowship recipients and since 2001 LEF has been providing support for independent video and filmmakers in New England with over $1,800,000 in grants distributed. Under her guidance LEF reaches out to other industry related organizations and works closely with the New England Film community.

John MacNeil formed Moody Street Pictures five years ago with a goal to build a collaborative of producers, camera operators, directors and editors. A long-time cameraman, both he and John Rule worked for Brian Heller at Boston Camera in 1982. He went on to found the Boston Film Factory now both companies are a part of Rule Broadcast. An industry leader and producer he has become an advocate for the industry.

Angela Peri started Boston Casting, Inc. about 17 years ago after her acting adventures in Italy, a casting job for CINEMA PARADISO, a stint as a stand-up comic, and working for a another top-casting agency in Boston, she wanted to start her own business. Deciding between a restaurant and a casting agency, she chose the later and directors and actors alike are happy with her decision.

Congratulations! We view each of them as making a significant difference to our industry in New England. We are so very fortunate to have them in our midst and they inspire us all!

Panelists include: Eric Latek (Phantazma Pictures), David Bettencourt (Midway Pictures), Christian de Rezendes (Breaking Branches Pictures), Frank D'Agostino (Prince Caspian Productions), Doug Kirkpatrick (producer, entertainment attorney), Phil Capobres (SENE Film, Music and Arts Festival), Don Farias (SENE Film, Music and Arts Festival), Toni-Ann Baker (Two Sisters Productions) and Joe Ruggeri (Newport International Film Festival).
