"Battery Operated Girlfriend" Seeking Props & Locations

From Producer Scott:
Our next masterwork is called Battery Operated Girlfriend, a dark comedy full of influences from the 1950's and Looney Tunes cartoons. We'll be shooting soon, probably the first two weekends in June. Please take a look at the lists below and let Producer Scott know if you can help at sm@sublux.net or 617-640-0185. THANK YOU!

PROPS
--Fun 50's gadgets and garage tools
--Science-y things...like the classic jacob's ladder that should be part of every respectable mad scientist lab
--We need to have a fancy cake made (50's style with fondant), and also cupcakes that spell out "Apologies". Anybody know someone at a good bakery? We'll pay, just hoping for a discount as the current quote is $104 for the cake alone!
--Need a round cake pan / cake mold. About 8-10" round and high.
--Wheelchair
--Counterweight for a balancing scale
--Solder gun

LOCATIONS
--KITCHEN / Our biggest need. Sounds easy but half the script takes place here and it has specific requirements. It needs to be larger than average with high ceilings and have an oven that faces the middle of the room. The oven door needs to have a window so we can see what's baking inside. We want to put a small table for two in the kitchen (or the room next to it) for the characters to eat at. Best if it's colorful (or if we could paint it and then re-paint it back). We need to shoot here for two full days so we'll pay $$ if we have to!
--HALLWAY / A long hallway, not too many doors

CREW
--Art Dept folks. We have an entire mad scientist lab to set up and run. We'll have beakers and test tubes and bubbling things. We also have a smoke ring gun to shoot smoke from some sort of machine.

5th Annual Ahtspot Open Call

On Monday, June 21st 2010 at 7:00pm at Tazza Café in Providence, RI, Ahtspot.com presents the 5th Annual Ahtspot Open Call! This is an event for actors, filmmakers and theater professional like no other. The Ahtspot Open Call is an open form audition show where talented actors can audition for the crowd of directors, producers and even other actors. Each actor gets no more than two minutes on stage, and if they go over their time they are hosed down with silly string to let them know it is time to go. This popular event has been very well attended in the past and this year’s event will be once again hosted by none other than the very talented John Ring. You can see pictures and videos at the links below. Actors can find instructions to sign up below as well.

Directors, producers and other theater and film professionals—this is a free event to check out the local New England pool of talent. From 7pm to 9pm you will be able to watch actors audition for the audience, then after the show stick around and approach your favorite talent. Order a drink, relax, take notes and enjoy the show!

Actors, sign up begins at 6:00pm and there can be a line. Actors will be taken on a first come, first serve basis. Ahtspot.com clients will have the ability to pre-register online. However if you are not there when your name is called to go on stage, you will be skipped and added to the end of the line. Not all performers may get a chance to perform if time runs out. Remember you have two minutes or less to do your piece. You can perform anything you want, it is your time to shine! So get there early or sign up in the members’ section.

Also, next year keep your eye out for a new bigger event coming up from Ahtspot.com that will include a chance for all ahtists to show off their work from all mediums. This may be the last Ahtspot Open Call held in Providence for a while, so if you have been thinking of going, this is the event to be at. Come, enjoy yourself and meet some cool people!

Ahtspot's Open Call is an 18+ Event - 21+ to drink. Children under 18 must be with a parent/guardian.

CAST AND CREW CALL - HORROR FILM SHOOTING IN MAINE

From Unstoppable Artists, LLC:

We are shooting an ultra low budget horror feature film in Maine this August.

WHO WE ARE: a production company based out of New York, headed up by a 32 year old film school grad (who also has a law degree, an MBA, a Masters of Entrepreneurship, and is an Iraq war vet. He has also run numerous companies over the years, most in showbusiness, and has authored a number of published and acclaimed books.)

THE FILM: The story centers around Stephen King. No more can be said about the story at this time except that it is unique, with a concept that everyone seems to like and a fun twist ending. :) If offered a position, you will be able to read the script in its entirety to help you in making your decision whether to help us out.

THE SHOOT: We are shooting throughout all of August. If you are not free for ALL of August, please do not apply. You will be living in Maine during the entire shoot (probably 2 weeks, but potentially 3, maybe 4).

CREW CALL (casting call is below):

1. HORROR DP. We are shooting on Canon HF 100 cameras, High Def, and the DP would have to use our cameras. The director/producer is well versed in making films and cinematography, but needs someone to focus exclusively on composition and lighting. We might consider using YOUR cameras under limited circumstances.

2. HORROR MAKE UP ARTIST. We need someone to help with makeup and fx for about 6 scenes. One of the scenes involves a severed head, so you would need to know how to create a severed head (based on a real actor's face) and/or know someone who can do this for us.

3. SCRIPT SUPERVISOR AND/OR 1st AD. The director/producer is a very meticulously organized person, but needs someone to make sure all shots on the shot list are well... shot, and also ensure that everyone on set is where they are supposed to be at the right time. A very logistics heavy position.

4. ON-SET SOUND ENGINEER. Looking for someone who has experience as an audio engineer/on-set sound engineer. We will be using lavs and booms for the shoot, but probably not a mixer. Responsibilities would include: helping to prep audio for each set; wild sound at each location; lav and boom set up and use; and other sound related tasks. Ideally, this person can also assist in post during sound editing.

5. PRODUCTION ASSISTANTS. Anyone who has enthusiasm, a good work ethic, is fun to work with, and is willing to do anything that needs to be done to help the project move forward ('anything' does not mean anything sexual, or outside the scope of what a PA normally does on a set) NOTE: most PAs are probably going to be picked from local crew in Maine/New Hampshire

COMPENSATION:
a) A free summer lake trip to Maine. You would be sleeping in the lake house on a lake in Maine with the rest of the primary cast and crew. The lake house is literally 20 feet from what National Geographic calls 'one of the top five most beautiful glacier lakes in the world'. In other words, you'll be swimming, hiking, boating, etc. during downtime (and yes, there will be downtime) And yes, the producer has a ski boat right on the dock in front of the house that we'll all be having fun on.
b) 2 meals per day (very basic) during shoot
c) Transportation to Maine and back, plus lodging as mentioned above
d) Credit in the film, of course
e) Deferred compensation contract, payable upon profit (if any) from a distribution deal

IF INTERESTED (please follow these instructions):
a) reply to this email with the subject: HORROR FILM -- (put your position here that you are applying for), for example: HORROR FILM - DP, or HORROR FILM - MAKEUP ARTIST, or HORROR FILM - AUDIO, or HORROR FILM - SCRIPT SUPERVISOR, or HORROR FILM - 1ST AD, or HORROR FILM - PRODUCTION ASSISTANT
b) be sure to explain why you are interested
c) be sure to explain your experience to date
d) be sure to state that you are free for all of August, and that you do not mind living in Maine for the entire shoot
d) DO NOT ATTACH ANYTHING---include any resume in the body of the email.

CASTING CALL:

NOTE: We are debating whether to make the film a SAG Ultra Low Budget project, or to shoot non-union. Odds are that even if we do shoot union, most of the roles cast are going to be non-union simply because we need to use the limited funding we have for equipment, makeup, food, etc. If you are non-union and fit the character description, you will probably be considered first, before we consider a member of SAG. SAG members: feel free to submit. If we end up going SAG, there is a slight possibility we will consider you.

We are currently seeking:

LAMONT (24 - 34, Black, Tough guy on outside, softie on the inside) -- Supporting Lead, good comic timing

LORI (20 - 30), Pretty, Size A or B cup bra, potential makeout scene with a guy, good comic timing

NICOLE (20 - 30), Pretty, C or larger bra cup size, upper body nudity in shower scene, big makeout scene with a guy, good comic timing

HILARY (20 - 30), Pretty, bra-size irrelevant (ha!), good comic timing

LEE (40 - 50), the owner of the local marina on the lake, a skeevish looking person, country bumkin, think 'deliverance', odd person for sure, eerie and unsettling, a lascivious person who likes to lick his lips

GAME WARDEN (35 - 60), local warden who patrols the lake. Professional, but again, eerie and unsettling

SHERIFF (35 - 60), professional

COMPENSATION:
a) A free summer lake trip to Maine. You would be sleeping in the lake house on a lake in Maine with the rest of the primary cast and crew. The lake house is literally 20 feet from what National Geographic calls 'one of the top five most beautiful glacier lakes in the world'. In other words, you'll be swimming, hiking, boating, etc. during downtime (and yes, there will be downtime) And yes, the producer has a ski boat right on the dock in front of the house that we'll all be having fun on.
b) 2 meals (very basic) during shoot
c) Transportation to Maine and back, plus lodging as mentioned above
d) Credit in the film, of course
e) Deferred compensation, payable upon profit (if any) from a distribution deal

IF INTERESTED (please follow these instructions):
a) reply to this email with the subject: HORROR FILM -- (put the role here that you are applying for), for example: HORROR FILM - LORI
b) be sure to explain why you are interested and why you'd be perfect for the role
c) be sure to explain your experience to date
d) mention whether you can SWIM proficiently
e) include any resume in the BODY of the email
f) attach a HEADSHOT to the email

OR OR OR OR OR OR OR OR

Send a cover letter, headshot, and resume with the same information to:

BOSTON, MASS. – 25 May 2010

This weekend, local short film “Skin and Bone” received the "Merit of Awareness" award at the Awareness Film Festival in Los Angeles, California. The festival’s mission is “bringing awareness and opening eyes to some of our world's pressing issues.” In addition, it was recently awarded a “Certificate of Excellence” from SkyFest Film and Script Festival. The award-winning short spotlights the inner workings of a cardiac catheterization laboratory and focuses on the multicultural nature of medicine and equity in healthcare today. This marks the third festival award for “Skin and Bone.”

“Skin and Bone” filmed in Boston on a $500 budget with an all-volunteer New England cast and crew. It is the work of Jamaica Plain residents Philip and Lucy Magcalas, who are current medical students.

Rogue Cinema’s Cary Conley calls it "a touching and thought-provoking film about the health care field… raw and emotional as well as tender. This terrific film is... a work of love and a treat for the viewer." Meanwhile, Joanne Ross from Movie Buffs gives the film 3 ½ out of 4 stars, adding, “Skin and Bone offers a more truthful and genuine experience of life for healthcare workers… Without exception, the entire cast delivers well acted yet underplayed performances… Kudos to Magcalas and his talented cast for a fine piece of cinema.”

This new film from independent production company, Milk and Cookie Productions is available on DVD on their website, with a portion of the proceeds to go towards Partners In Health’s relief work in Haiti.

Grant-Funded Filmmaking-Create a Funded Short and Learn the Basics of Video Production

The first run of our grant-funded filmmaking class was a tremendous success, so RIDOT is sponsoring students who would like to sign up for the second run. The class size is limited and first come, first served - the first class was over booked, so sign up soon.

With the RIDOT sponsorship, this class is fully reimbursed! The next session starts May 24th!

Also, some specialty approaches to screenwriting!

All registrations and more info at www.rifcfilms.com/education.aspx

When you're looking to fund your filmmaking, don't forget about grants. Many public and non-profit initiatives exist to further a cause or champion a message. In this course, ten students will fulfill an existing grant to create a short film of their own design, from start to finish, with an experienced instructor to guide the way.

Our current mission is fully funded by a grant from the RI Department of Transportation. Each class will create one in a series of short films that aim to decrease drunk driving in 18-35 year old males. For each of several sessions, this grant provides full tuition reimbursement to ten students who complete the course, plus a production budget and a screening at the 2011 SENE Film Festival and a special screening event in September.

Students will also be featured in a co-documentary highlighting the mission-oriented impact of their filmmaking experience, which will be presented alongside the student shorts.

Each student will receive a dvd copy of the finished product and a certificate of completion.

Schedule:
Classes will meet on Monday and Thursday, May 24th through June 21st. There will also be a shooting weekend on Saturday, June 12th and Sunday, June 13th.

Seeking Filmmakers to Participate in IFP's Independent Film Week Project

This comes to us from Danielle DiGiacomo, Community Manager, IFP:

Thank you for being a continued supporter and friend of IFP. I am asking for your help in finding filmmakers to participate in IFP’s Independent Film Week Project Forum.

Independent Film Week is the oldest and largest forum in the U.S. for the discovery of new projects in development and new voices on the independent film scene. The Project Forum is a meetings-driven forum connecting filmmakers who have new narrative and documentary projects with key industry executives interested in identifying projects with which to become involved at the financing or distribution stage.

It is qualitatively and quantitatively the best opportunity for an independent filmmaker to connect with industry professionals - including producers, funders, distributors, broadcasters, sales agents and festival programmers. The Project Forum also furthers filmmaker and industry interaction with opportunities for networking at social events throughout the week.

(Recent projects have included: Emily Abt’s Toe to Toe, Courtney Hunt’s Frozen River, Rodney Evans’ Brother to Brother, Nicole Kassell’s The Woodsman, : Laura Poitras’ The Oath, Scott Hamilton Kennedy's The Garden, Rick Goldsmith and Judith Ehrlich’s The Most Dangerous Man in America: Daniel Ellsberg and the Pentagon Papers, Aron Gaudet’s The Way We Get By, Kimberly Reed’s Prodigal Sons, and many more).

We are reaching out to organizations and individuals who we feel would have a constituency well-suited to this program. We would love it if you could get the word out to your community to encourage them to apply to the Project Forum. This can be done either through the following tools: Newsletter or list-serve mention; Dedicated email blast; Blog promotion; or article written.

Please let me know if and how you can help and which blurbs, banners, buttons, etc. you need.

In addition, if you know of any projects that you feel might be of interest to the program, please contact me at dgiacomo@ifp.org. It would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks so much for all of your continued support. I look forward to seeing you soon.

Second Annual GiveMe5 Teen Film Festival

Contact: Sherilyn Brown
RISCA Education Program
401-222-6994

The Rhode Island Film and Television Office, in conjunction with the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts Education Program, and the Rhode Island Arts Learning Network, announces its second annual GiveMe5 Teen Film Festival, to be held Saturday, May 15th at Bryant University, Janikies Auditorium, from 12:30-4:30 PM.

Teen filmmakers from school and community media education programs will show their work, and a panel of professionals will give feedback after each piece. Participating programs this year include: Cranston West High School, East Bay Met School (Newport), Bishop Hendricken High School (Warwick) , Providence Academy for International Studies, LaSalle Academy (Providence), Beacon Charter High School (Woonsocket), Hope High School (Providence), and Westerly High School Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of RI Film & TV Office, will be the master of ceremonies for the event.

Each participating school or community media program has entered up to three pieces in the event. The purpose of GiveMe5 is to network media education programs statewide, and build the community of young filmmakers in Rhode Island. Rather than a competition, the focus of the showcase is on media education.

“Young people today are inundated with images about them but not by them” says Sherilyn Brown, Education Director of the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. “Media education is an important part of putting young filmmakers at the center, letting them tell us in images and sound what they think and feel about the world around them.”

For more info on GiveMe5, call 222-6994, Monday-Friday, 8:30-4:30.

“The screening of this special motion picture promises to be the must-attend event of the summer,” added George T. Marshall, RIIFF Executive Director and executive producer of the film. “The screening also marks the return of Flickers to its home base of Newport, where it began 29 years ago. We could not be more delighted to bring summertime viewing back to the City by the Sea.”

Part history, part contemporary look, HEDGEROW is told through the focus of Slocum, Newport’s last grand dame, who died in the summer of 2008. Slocum’s family has granted the filmmakers exclusive access to her archives and private Bellevue Avenue estate, where much of the film was shot over the last year. The film is currently in post-production.

The Providence premiere will be at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, at Veterans Memorial Auditorium, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence, R.I., 02903. The Newport opener will be 2 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 14 at the Jane Pickens Theater, 49 Touro Street
Newport, R.I., 02840.

Ticket information will be available at the FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival, www.film-festival.org and at the HEDGEROW site, www.BehindTheHedgerow.com
BEHIND THE HEDGEROW is the second title from Eagle Peak Media, www.EaglePeakMedia.com, the production company founded in 2008 by Miller and Bettencourt. Providence's Premiere of "Herbeast Comes to Life"

Hello, this is Linda Gatta, executive producer of the RIFC's affiliated production of "Herbeast Comes to Life." Herbeast celebrated its world premiere at the Strasbourg International Film Festival in September, 2009, and was also an official selection of the Cairo International Film Festival in November of 2009, but as of yet, it has not played in the States. That's about to change!! Herbeast is having its Providence premiere this Thursday the 13th of May at 9pm at the Avon Cinema on Thayer Street.

This is the perfect opportunity for everyone who worked on or was in some way associated with this movie but who has yet to see a copy of it finished. The Avon is a Rhode Island institution and one of the best places to see independent cinema in all of the State. A chance to see their hard work pay off on the big screen should not be wasted, as, due to finances, any further screenings at such a premiere location would be highly doubtful. There will be DVD copies of the 90 minute movie available in the lobby for $10, as well as commemorative posters, and a small reception after the screening, including a Herbeast cake, is in the works.

Again, this is a one time only event not to be missed! Although, as many of you know, this was a rushed, low-budgeted production, the end results turned out to be surprisingly well. Here's what Christine Scott, Festival Director of the Strasbourg International Film Festival, had to say in regards to our movie... “We are absolutely thrilled to have Herbeast in our line-up. It’s a really nice fit and very much it’s own type of film… early John Waters mixed with Nora Ephron. I think the audiences here will like it a lot!”

My hope is that the powers at be for the Collaborative help spread the word about our Avon event and do everything they can to ensure a successful night of fun, film, and fuckery!

Sincerely
Linda Gatta

Press Release from the Rhode Island Film and Television Office

Contact: Sherilyn Brown, RISCA Education Program, 222-6994
May 6, 2010

The panel this year will include the Honorable Frank Caprio, chief Judge of the Providence Municipal Court and television judge for ABC’s Court in Providence. GiveMe5 is free and open to the public, but seating is on a first-come first served basis.

Each participating school or community media program has entered up to three pieces in the event. The purpose of GiveMe5 is to network media education programs statewide, and build the community of young filmmakers in Rhode Island. Rather than a competition, the focus of the showcase is on media education. The three guest panelists who will give feedback on each film are Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of the RI Film & TV Office, Dana Neugent, a professor of film at the University of Rhode Island, and Judge Frank Caprio, Chairman of the Board of Governors for Higher Education.

“The future of the rapidly expanding film, television, and new media industry in our Ocean State is related to growing young filmmakers in our education system,” says Steven Feinberg of Rhode Island Film & TV Office. “When I was a child, I was fortunate that my father was a 6th grade teacher because he had the insight to see my early interest in moviemaking. He and my Mom nurtured my passion and encouraged me to learn as much as I could. With each experience I fell more in love with film, and it became my life’s work and passion. Working in film and technology is a natural for most kids today, and we have a responsibility to educate them about the art of filmmaking and how they can achieve quality work in this innovative industry.”

WE NEED A MOUSE AND A HOUSE

Scott Crowningshield and friends are filming a new short film the first week of June and are in need of TWO very important things:

First is a mouse or rat to play the part of a lab rodent. Don’t worry, no actual experiments will be conducted and in fact your furry friend needs no talent for this part. If he or she can sit in a cage and look like a rodent then we want it! Half day of filming your mouse = $50 for you.

Second is the use of a larger than average kitchen. Style doesn’t matter much, but we’re hoping for a kitchen with room for a small table for two and an oven that faces the middle of the room. Colorful walls and higher ceilings are helpful, too. The problem is that we’ll need two full weekend days to shoot our scenes. It’s quite an imposition, we know, and therefore we will be offering a little CASH in return.

Please contact Scott at sm@sublux.net or 617-640-0185 for details. A little more info on the short can be found at www.sublux.net/BOG. Thank you!
