Dates for 48 Hr Film Project 2012 announced, casting crew needed, new RIFC classes

 February 28, 2012

Providence 48 Hr Film Project dates announced!

The RI Film Collaborative and the Providence 48 Hour Film Project announce the dates for the 2012 contest as Friday, July 13-Sunday July 15.
  48
The 48 Hour Film Project is a wild and sleepless weekend in which you and a team make a movie-write, shoot, edit and score it-in just 48 hours.
On Friday night, you get a character, a prop, a line of dialogue and a genre, all to include in your movie. 48 hours later, the movie must be complete. Then it will show at a local theater, usually in the next week.
In 2011, nearly 60,000 filmmakers made 4,000 films in 96 cities on 6 continents. This year, we're even bigger, with filmmakers around the world taking the challenge to make a film in just 48 hours.

RIFC  member making non profit short film

Half Pint is a short dramatic film to motivate our youngest generation to talk to, and learn history from, the World War II generation.
The production will shoot on locations in Rhode Island and New Hampshire. The film is intended to motivate our youngest generation to talk to and learn from the WW II' generation (out greatest generation) about the history they made and experienced. The film will be shown at film festivals and be made available without charge  to WW II museums, schools, reenactment groups, and other non-profit historical educational organizations. This professionally produced film will transport our young viewers back in time with the use of wonderful locations, a talented cast and historically accurate WW II reenactor extra performers.
This project will be financed with this kickstarter.com campaign, as well as with grants and donations through our non-profit producing partner FLICKERS/Rhode Island International Film Festival (501C-3). The goal is to raise at least one third to one half of our budget from kickstarter, but more would be great. The more we raise, the better our project will be.

TEDx needs video Production

TEDx is coming to Providence, and they're looking for video production help.

If you haven't heard of TED, it's a really interesting international think-tank and idea exploration phenomenon that focuses on a number of short, idea-focused presentations by leaders in their fields. There are hundreds of "TED talks" available on YouTube or through the TED website - we tracked down a few film-related favorites, so you can get the idea:

Facial Animation: http://www.ted.com/tbalks/paul_debevec_animates_a_photo_real_digital_face.html

Nollywood: http://www.ted.com/talks/franco_sacchi_on_nollywood.html

JJ's magic box: http://www.ted.com/talks/j_j_abrams_mystery_box.html

James Cameron: http://www.ted.com/talks/james_cameron_before_avatar_a_curious_boy.html

Movies that matter: http://www.ted.com/talks/jeff_skoll_makes_movies_that_make_change.html

Peter Gabriel changes the world with video:

A global day of film:

http://www.ted.com/talks/jehane_noujaim_inspires_a_global_day_of_film.html

The storytelling process: http://www.ted.com/talks/shekhar_kapur_we_are_the_stories_we_tell_ourselves.html

TEDx is the distributed, local version of TED. Here's the information on its visit to Providence http://www.tedxprovidence.com . Presentations can be anywhere from 4 to 20 minutes, and it's a one-day event.

There are two opportunities for RIFC members here - TEDx is looking for:

  1. Presenters to talk on topics. This process may be competitive, but if you have an idea for a TED talk, contact phaas@aidg.orgwith your proposal. They're still selecting speakers, but you'll want to act soon.
  2. Someone to record and edit the talks. They're looking for something similar to, but simpler than, the samples above - basically, two-cameras locked down for each presentation, and then pretty minimal editing to get them upload-worthy. You'd also consult with them on setting up lighting and audio for the event, to help with filming. There's a small stipend, and it's great exposure (they'll promote their video partner, and you'll get to cobrand the video. Some of these go pretty viral). If you're down for this, or want more information, please contact Mike Ryan at mike@writeryan.com.

RI Screenwriter Chris Sparling film

RI SCREENWRITER'S NEXT FILM TO BE RELEASED IN MARCH

The psychological thriller "ATM", written by North Providence, RI native Chris Sparling, will be released on VOD (Video on Demand) and digital download by IFC Films on March 2nd, followed by a theatrical release starting April 6th.

ATM stars Alice Eve (SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGE, "Entourage"), Brian Geraghty (THE HURT LOCKER), and Josh Peck (ICE AGE, "Drake & Josh") as three co-workers who, on a routine stop at an ATM late one evening, end up in a desperate fight for their lives after becoming trapped by an unknown assailant.  The film is produced by Gold Circle Films (MY BIG FAT GREEK WEDDING, THE HAUNTING IN CONNECTICUT), directed by David Brooks, and written by Chris Sparling, who also wrote the dramatic thriller BURIED, starring Ryan Reynolds, which earned him an award for Best Original Screenplay by the National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, as well as a Goya Award (Spain's Academy Award) in the same category.

ABOUT CHRIS SPARLING

Chris Sparling was born and raised in North Providence, RI.  ATM was his second screenplay to make the Hollywood Black List, which is compiled by surveying film executives who list their favorite scripts written that year, and is considered a high honor in Hollywood circles.  He will next be working with producer M. Night Shyamalan on the film REINCARNATE, the second in a three-film series known as "The Night Chronicles."  In addition, the film MERCY, for which Chris wrote the screenplay, will begin shooting later this year in Cape Town, South Africa.  Chris will make his feature directing debut this summer with FALLING SLOWLY, a supernatural drama, which he plans to shoot in Los Angeles and Rhode Island.
