CALL-FOR-APPLICATIONS - Documentary Filmmakers

The Robert Flaherty Film Seminar announces a new fellowship program for New England filmmakers. Fellowships are funded by LEF New England, a regional office of the LEF Foundation, and cover the entire registration fee as well as travel to the Seminar, which takes place June 20-26, 2009 at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. Complete Fellowship program information and application procedures are available at the Flaherty website www.flahertyseminar.org.

Application deadline: March 13

The Robert Flaherty Film Seminar is named after Robert Flaherty (1884-1951), who is considered by many to be the father of the American documentary. Flaherty’s groundbreaking documentary of Eskimo life, Nanook of the North is among the most noted films of the silent era. He was also the creator of such classic poetic films as Moana, Man of Aran, and Louisiana Story. The Seminar began in 1955—before the era of film schools—when Flaherty’s widow, Frances, convened a group of filmmakers, critics, curators, musicians, and other film enthusiasts at the Flaherty farm in Vermont. more than fifty years the Flaherty Seminar has been firmly established as a one-of-a-kind institution that seeks to encourage filmmakers and other artists to explore the potential of the moving image.

The films of such directors as Robert Drew, Louis Malle, the Maysles brothers, Mira Nair, D.A. Pennebaker, Satyajit Ray, and Robert M. Young were shown at the Seminar before they were known generally in the American film community. New cinematic techniques and approaches first presented and debated at the Seminar have routinely made their way into mainstream American film.

About the 2009 Robert Flaherty Film Seminar

"Witnesses, Monuments, Ruins"

Moving images have become the most common mode of relating to the events of our time – whether catastrophic wars, political change, or precious moments of everyday life. These images capture the words and gestures of those who speak before a camera. They observe the monuments and ruins left by the past. And they interpret, intervene in, and re-invent the testimonial act itself. Programmed by Irina Leimbacher, the 2009 Flaherty Seminar will explore the act of bearing witness - bringing memory, experience, and history into the present - through an eclectic range of topics and formal approaches, in works from the Middle East, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and the United States. Invited artists include Omar Amiralay, Juan Manuel Echavarria, Amar Kanwar, and Beryl Korot.

- I will have tickets on hand at the next RIFC meeting, so please see me if you want the best seats in the house ;)

NAQ Productions Triple Short Project

I am also looking for any connections to radio stations, news stations, local papers etc that may do a story or interview to get more exposure :) Also looking for help from someone with a color bulk printer, please email me if you or anyone you know could help out.

Get your tickets early and I will hopefully be shaking the hand of everyone that attends! Thanks! Also please spread the word!

AMERICA'S LOST BAND/The Remains to perform April 3 at the SENE Film, Music & Arts Festival

Don Farias, Producing Director
SENE Film, Music & Arts Festival

PROVIDENCE, RI (March 2, 2009) - The Southeast New England (SENE) Film, Music & Arts Festival presents a special performance by The Remains following the documentary AMERICA'S LOST BAND on Friday, April 3 at 9:30 pm at the RISD Auditorium in Providence. This event is one of more than 20 film, music and art programs scheduled during the festival, which takes place April 2-5 in Providence, RI.

The Remains appeared on Ed Sullivan, opened for the Beatles, and then broke up on the brink of fame.

'Had these Boston bad boys stuck it out beyond their 1966 debut, we might today be calling them--and not the Stones--the World's Greatest Rock 'n' Roll Band. As it is, The Remains most certainly are America's greatest lost band.' Mark Kemp, June 2007 Paste Magazine.

AMERICA'S LOST BAND is a documentary of The Remains' return to Los Angeles for the first time in 40 years, a film that follows a group of 60-year-old rock musicians, who were once on the cusp of fame, still pursuing their passions. Through the voices of group members and '60s flashbacks, the film explores the highs and the lows they have experienced, including reflections on their emotional roller-coaster ride during the Beatles tour. It's the story of what happens when a band reaches the cusp of rock greatness, but doesn't make it over the final hurdle. This is a portrayal of the value of long-term friendships and of a special bond that has lasted more than four decades.

AMERICA'S LOST BAND is 65 minutes and will be followed by a Q&A session with The Remains band members Barry Tashian, Vern Miller, Bill Briggs and Chip Damiani before their live unplugged performance. Tickets are $10 ($5 for students, seniors and members) and may be purchased at the door or in advance by visiting www.senefilm.org.

Governor Rell, NBC Universal Announce Plans for New Production Facility in Stamford

State’s Film Tax Credits Draw Project, 150-200 Jobs to Connecticut

Governor M. Jodi Rell today announced that NBC Universal is in negotiations with Connecticut on a project that is anticipated to result in a large television production studio at the Rich Forum Theater in Stamford, bringing approximately 150 to 200 jobs and an initial infrastructure investment in excess of $3 million to the state.

“This is terrific news for the state and for Stamford – it will bring much-needed jobs, revenue and excitement and we’re proud as a peacock to pull it off,” Governor Rell said. “This is good news at a time when we need good news, and my Administration will continue to do all it can to bring good, dependable jobs to the state.

“Not only are these jobs themselves important, many of these production facilities can become tourist attractions in their own right, becoming an additional economic development tool,” the Governor said. “Last month we held a grand opening for Blue Sky Studios’ new digital animation production facility in Greenwich. Now NBC Universal is in negotiations with our state, both in large part because Connecticut has made wise, targeted use of tax credits to make our state more attractive to this major industry. It is critical that Connecticut continues to enhance its reputation as a leader in the entertainment industry.”

The state’s 30 percent production tax credit on annual activity and 20 percent tax credit on infrastructure costs exceeding $1 million were among several factors cited by NBC Universal as reasons why it is considering Connecticut as a location.

Barry Wallach, President of NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution said, “As a company based in the Tri-State area, NBC Universal is enthusiastic about expanding our footprint in the region. The tax credit program fosters additional public/private investments in production infrastructure that Connecticut can use to help the state through the current economic crisis. We thank the Governor and the State of Connecticut for supporting the media and entertainment industry through this important tax-credit program.”

The Flaherty Seminar, a Week-Long Event in June

Hello, my name is Farihah Zaman and I am the Program Manager here at The Flaherty. I am not sure how familiar you are with The Flaherty Seminar, a week-long event we hold every June to bring together filmmakers, students, programmers, industry professionals, academics, etc in the spirit of documentary filmmaker Robert Flaherty. Each day of the seminar there are three screening sessions, chosen by a guest curator and based around a theme, followed by thought provoking and often controversial discussions. The Seminar also includes picnics, parties, barbecues, and other social activities.

We have an amazing Fellowship opportunity for New England area filmmakers that covers all registration and travel costs and we were hoping you could help spread the word! Could you please send out the copy below (or the longer version, attached) to your email list, include us in your newsletter, forward to interested parties, or post on relevant listservs? Even word of mouth will be a big help in finding good candidates for our Fellowship program.

Please let me know if you are able to help. I look forward to hearing from you!

Best,
Farihah

CALL-FOR-APPLICATIONS

The Robert Flaherty Film Seminar announces a new fellowship program for New England filmmakers. Fellowships are funded by LEF New England, a regional office of the LEF Foundation, and cover the entire registration fee as well as travel to the Seminar, which takes place June 20-26, 2009 at Colgate University in Hamilton, NY. Complete Fellowship program information and application procedures are available at the Flaherty website www.flahertyseminar.org.

Application deadline: March 13

About the Robert Flaherty Film Seminar:

About the 2009 Robert Flaherty Film Seminar:
