NEWPORT DOCUMENTARY FILMING BEGINS

June 29, 2009

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEWPORT, R.I. –– After weeks of advance work, production began this past weekend on BEHIND THE HEDGEROW, a feature-length documentary about Newport society that will be broadcast on PBS in 2010.

The movie, from filmmakers G. Wayne Miller and David Bettencourt, is an exclusive inside look at the people of fortune and their descendants who have made Newport a coveted address and summer destination since the mid-1800s.

Filming at the Newport Flower Show, courtesy of The Preservation Society of Newport County, host of the show, was the first of several on-location shoots that will bring the filmmakers literally behind the hedgerow –– into the residences and private worlds of Newport’s leading families.

Part history and part contemporary look, BEHIND THE HEDGEROW will utilize rare footage, photographs, archives and on-camera interviews. A significant part of the film will be the story of the late Eileen Gillespie Slocum, whose family has welcomed the filmmakers into the world of their late mother, who died in 2008.

“To our knowledge, no one has ever documented these fascinating people and their city-by-the-sea in a movie,” said Miller. “We are excited to begin.”

BEHIND THE HEDGEROW will premiere at the 2010 Rhode Island International Film Festival. The movie trailer will be shown publicly for the first time in Newport on Aug. 13, 2009, at the Redwood Library, one of the many local and state institutions that is assisting Miller, Bettencourt and their crew with the film.

BEHIND THE HEDGEROW is the second title from Miller and Bettencourt’s non-profit Eagle Peak Media production company. ON THE LAKE, Eagle Peak’s first title, premiered in February to critical acclaim. PBS broadcasts in major national markets began in March and continue today. The DVD has recently been released.

Funding for the film is provided, in part, by a grant from the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities.

Miller, a staff writer at The Providence Journal, authored the 2000 Journal series about Newport society, A Nearly Perfect Summer. Bettencourt’s first feature film was the wildly successful YOU MUST BE THIS TALL: The Story of Rocky Point Park.

More, including a blog and how to follow production on Facebook and Twitter, is available at www.EaglePeakMedia.com and www.BehindTheHedgerow.com.

Press Release From the Connecticut Production Coalition:

Today the Legislature passed a budget that included major changes to the tax credit program. Governor Rell has made it clear that she will veto the budget and these modifications. This means that we still have time to convince Lawmakers not to make some of the proposed changes.

Given the current budget deficit, some changes to the program were expected, and there has been an ongoing dialogue with members of the legislature about tweaks that would make the program more efficient without compromising the growth of the industry. Compared to the efforts of some to completely eliminate the program, we have done well in keeping the credit largely intact – BUT WE MUST ADDRESS TWO MAJOR CONCERNS.

A few of the changes proposed have the potential to be devastating, particular to independent and smaller budgeted productions. We must fight hard and send the message that these changes will hamper growth without providing the state with the intended efficiency gains.

Most alarming to members of Connecticut’s burgeoning entertainment industry is the increase in the minimum spend requirement from $50,000 to $1 million. Many in-state production companies have thrived under the current program, ramping up production considerably with the help of the credits. A $1 million minimum spend would seriously hamper our efforts to grow this industry.

Another alarming change is a requirement that BOTH 50% of production AND 50% of post-production must be done in-state. This requirement would make it nearly impossible for the larger motion pictures to be produced in CT, while also halting growth of post facilities that have expanded here in CT over the past few years. We have recommended that the language read 50% of production OR 50% of post-production.

CPC representatives have been in contact with members of the legislature and the Governor's office in an effort to get these changes reversed and there does appear to be some movement to this end. Following is a breakdown of some of the changes in the current legislative bill being presented to the Governor:

1. Moves administration of the incentive program from the Commission on Culture and Tourism (CCT) to the Department of Economic and Community Development (DECD).

2. Moves the date from Jan 1, 2012 to Jan. 1, 2010 for the requirement that only in-state expenditures qualify for the credit. This requirement will spur the growth of more infrastructure and assure that the state is getting the benefit of these expenditures.

3. Raises minimum spend eligibility for tax credit from $50,000 to $1 million.

4. Requires company conduct at least 50% of principal photography and 50% of postproduction within the state.

5. Makes the infrastructure tax credit a flat 20 percent and increases the minimum qualifying expenditure to $5 million.

Again, CPC has been in ongoing talks with members of the legislature. They do seem to be listening and want to make sure that they get this right. PLEASE SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH US. We will compile comments and deliver them to key legislators - and PLEASE contact members of the legislature directly with your concerns. Thank you.

RI SCREENWRITER'S SCRIPT SLATED FOR PRODUCTION IN SUMMER OF 2009

STARRING RYAN REYNOLDS

Rhode Island native Chris Sparling's original screenplay, "Buried," is headed for production in Spain this summer, starring actor Ryan Reynolds.

Los Angeles, CA – Daily Variety reports that actor Ryan Reynolds will follow up his romantic comedy "The Proposal" by starring in "Buried," a film written by Rhode Island native Chris Sparling.

The film is being directed by Rodrigo Cortes, and produced by Peter Safran of The Safran Company and Adrian Guerra of Spain-based Versus Entertainment. The film will begin production at the end of this month in Barcelona. The story centers on a civilian contractor who is taken hostage in Iraq and awakens buried in a coffin in the desert.

Sparling, who grew up in North Providence, wrote, produced and co-directed the indie film "An Uzi at the Alamo," which premiered at the Columbus Theater in the summer of 2005 and was later released on HBO.

Items Needed for Whisper on the Bridge

This comes from Mark Charles Huntington:

We are having a bit of a problem. The camera we are using is a Panasonic
AG HVX 200. In order to film in the appropriate format it must use what is
called a P2 card. We thought we had access to more. We can
continue to film, but we must have access to other cards. If you know
of anyone who has access to one, please contact me a.s.a.p.

We are looking also for a man's blue suit, 43, 44 long coat, pants 34 or larger
waist, 31 or 32 length. Navy is a bit too dark, a light color would work better,
but if someone has a navy color, that would work. Single breasted is best.

THANKS.

Tom Cruise Casts his Eye on Boston

http://www.boston.com/ae/celebrity/more_names/blog/2009/06/tom_crui...

"Hollywood's infatuation with the Hub is getting serious. Very serious.
A slew of screen idols are about to descend on Boston to shoot new movies, including, we're told, Tom Cruise. That's right, the world's most famous movie star is nearly certain to shoot his latest flick here starting in September.
Called "Wichita," the action comedy would be the biggest budget movie ever to film here, and Cruise and co-star Cameron Diaz could be hanging around the Hub for up to three months. The film, one of several high-profile projects Cruise has been considering, will be directed by James Mangold, whose credits include "Walk the Line" and "Girl, Interrupted."
Not much is known about the script, which is being burnished now by Mangold and "Shutter Island" scribe Laeta Kalogridis, but Variety previously reported that the story centers on a single woman who meets a mysterious man on a blind date, and he turns out to be a handsome secret agent.
Since the prospective blockbuster stars Cruise, it will, of course, have several high-octane action sequences, and we're told producers have already approached city and state officials about securing permits to close select roads and bridges during shooting. We're also told that a location scout has been in the city for a few weeks checking out various neighborhoods.
It remains to be seen if Greater Boston has enough tradespeople to satisfy the demands of the many movies set to shoot here.
In addition to the Cruise pic, there's "The Fighter," director David O. Russell's biopic of Lowell-bred brawler "Irish" Micky Ward, which starts shooting in the Mill City July 6. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg and Christian Bale.
Then there's "Furry Vengeance," a family comedy starring Brendan Fraser and "High School Musical 3: Senior Year" co-star Matt Prokop, who plays a city kid forced to move to rural Oregon with his dad. The movie rolls early next month.
Later in July, Kevin James and Rosario Dawson will take up temporary residence at the Franklin Park Zoo to shoot "The Zookeeper." The movie stars James as a likeable zookeeper who's unlucky with the ladies, so consults with the critters. Yes, the animals talk in the film, which makes us wonder if Little Joe is busy learning English. (By the way, Franklin Park Zoo will be called Franklin Park Zoo in the movie.)
Finally, in August, Ben Affleck gets behind the camera again, following up "Gone Baby Gone" with "The Town," a movie based on Chuck Hogan's book "Prince of Thieves." The award-winning novel is about a Charlestown thief, played by Affleck, who falls hard for the bank manager whose branch he and his crew just robbed. Word is Rebecca Hall, who was in "Frost/Nixon," will play the pretty bank manager.
Of course, a few movies are already shooting. "Grown Ups," which is filming in Essex, stars Adam Sandler, David Spade, Chris Rock, Kevin James, Rob Schneider, and Salma Hayek, among others, and "Valediction," starring Eliza Dushku, Ben Barnes, and Danny Glover, will be in filming north of Boston for a few days before wrapping July 3. "The Company of Men," starring Affleck, Kevin Costner, and Tommy Lee Jones, finished shooting a couple of weeks ago."

SUMMER SHOOT PRODUCER ANNOUNCED

Award-winning Director to Head Kid Filmmakers Camp at Kay Studios

NEWPORT, RI -- Alec Asten, an award-winning filmmaker and president of Southeastern Connecticut Filmmakers, has been appointed the Shoot Producer for the July 27 Summer Shoot camp hosted by Kid Filmmakers.

"Alec is a popular Kid Filmmakers instructor who teaches directing to our young filmmakers," says Kid Filmmaker’s founder and Executive Director Eleyne Austen Sharp. A resident of Westerly, Asten recently produced “The Curse of Micah Hood”, which is based on a 17th century Connecticut legend. Asten’s film was awarded “Best Regional Short Film” from the SENE Film, Music and Arts Festival and “Best of New England” from the Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival.

In addition to his feature films, Asten has produced corporate television commercials and documentaries for such clients as NBC, ESPN, The History Channel, The Discovery Channel, Sony, Foxwoods Resorts, Billy Gilman and Earth, Wind and Fire. He is the president of Southeastern Connecticut Filmmakers, an organization which promotes quality filmmaking in Southeastern Connecticut.

Summer Shoot (Monday, July 27 thru Friday, July 31) is a working movie production unit. Held from 9 AM-4 PM at Kay Studios, 66 Valley Street in East Providence, Summer Shoot offers an intensive full-day curriculum for beginning and returning filmmakers, i.e. hands-on instruction in acting, directing, editing, lighting, sound, makeup, screenwriting and videography. Artists’ Exchange Announces Upcoming Monthly Variety Shows

Cranston, RI – Artists’ Exchange is pleased to announce an upcoming monthly Variety Show, presented by A Rose Productions in The Black Box Theatre. The first show will take place on Saturday, June 20th at 7pm.

Julie Bragg, Artistic Director of A Rose Productions, describes the show as “an interactive, inspirational, improvisational, musical sensation! Everything from Shakespeare to Sondheim!”.

Hailing from Johnston, Bragg has improv’d her way down the East Coast, settling in New York City and then in Florida, until recently returning to RI, with the Variety Show being her first project since her homecoming.

Facebook has facilitated a reunion for Julie and several of her former acting buddies, including Geoff White of Pawtucket, a cast member from the most recent Black Box Theatre production of “Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992,” Laura Kaslowski of Providence and Gladys Cole of Pawtucket, each of whom have joined Bragg's troupe. Other players include Melissa Bowler of Improv Jones, and Bob Reynolds, also a frequent cast member of Black Box Theatre Productions.

A founding member of AS220’s Porkchop Lounge (now the Empire Revue), Bragg has years of experience making people chuckle. She was a member of the Improvables in New York City, and began crafting her own variety shows during her time in Florida.

Improv is one of her two great theatrical loves; the other is Shakespeare. Bragg’s affection for Shakespeare often finds its way into her improv, from her version of “Hamlet” set in Brooklyn to a psychiatric patient’s description of recurring dreams featuring Shakespearean characters singing Broadway tunes.

With variety as the aim, each show’s line-up will feature two guest stars, perhaps a guitarist, maybe a poet, or even an opera singer.

Future Variety Show dates include July 18th, August 15th and September 26th. All shows will take place at 7pm in the Black Box Theatre at Artists’ Exchange. Tickets are $10 at the door.

Artists’ Exchange is located at 50 Rolfe Square in Cranston. For more information, contact Christina Mealey at 401.490.9475.

We're looking for people with their own equipment or access to equipment that can be rented very cheap. There is a small budget allotted to compensate you for your time and talent.

If any one is interested please email me back or call 805-729-7569 for more details.
Thank you very much for your time.

Sincerely,

Alex Afzali
