Opportunity for Local Screenplay Writer

This comes to us from:

Leo Anthony
asianbostonmagazine@gmail.com

Hi Everyone!

I recently met with a friend of mine from Southie, Matty, and he has a story outlined for a drama. He is looking for a competent and experienced writer with vision to turn this concept into a screenplay.

I will be overseeing the project, and we are looking for someone who will take this story and create a significant and believable piece to present to an actor, agency or studio.

It is very important that this person be living within a reasonable distance of Boston in order to meet in-person frequently when needed.

As you may know, all film industry eyes have been on Boston/New England, and they like concepts from Southie, and especially filming scenes here.

SERIOUS INQUIRIES ONLY. Please, we need someone reliable and proven
in this field, has knowledge of writing scenes, and will start and
finish this project.

I hope to hear from you soon.
Thank you very much.

This personal documentary tells the story of first-time filmmaker Katrina Browne's New England ancestors, the largest slave-trading family in U.S. history.

At Browne's urging, nine fellow descendants of her prominent family agree to journey with her to retrace the steps of the Triangle Trade. The family travels from Bristol, Rhode Island where the family Å\business was based, to slave forts in Ghana where they meet with African-Americans on their own homecoming pilgrimages, to the ruins of a family-owned sugar plantation in Cuba.

Redesign Radio Website (bsrlive.com)

This comes to us from Toni P., MergingArts Productions/Spoiler Alert Radio:

PROJECT SUMMARY:
BSR, Brown Student & Community Radio, is seeking a Providence-based artist/designer to redesign bsrlive.com. The redesign project seeks to improve the functionality and manageability of our online home by better highlighting our unique content in an original way (designers familiar with bsrlive.com should know that we will not be modifying the functionality of our current archiving system).

Tuning in to bsrlive.com, listeners can hear anything ranging from a noise-rock band performing live in-studio, to Off the Beat covering underrepresented local news, to interviews with independent filmmakers on Spoiler Alert. All designs should respect this level of diversity. Designers will be afforded significant creative control throughout the project and will work with station leadership from conception to implementation.

ORGANIZATION INFORMATION:
BSR is Brown Student & Community Radio. We are a Providence-based, non-commercial radio station sustained by student and community volunteers who value quality programming, localism, and education.

For over ten years, BSR has been dedicated to providing creative, diverse, and intellectually engaging programming. We broadcast in Providence from 7 PM to 5 AM on 88.1FM, WELH, and stream online 24/7 at bsrlive.com.

PROJECT GOALS:
Website Design: Easily navigable; strong artistic identity differentiating it from other radio websites. Website Maintenance:
User-friendly web publishing, including editing web pages, updating web pages, and creating web pages (PHP), Dynamic content which updates automatically and informs users of "what they missed" ( e.g. Calendars, Current program, Event recently added) (RSS).

SCOPE OF WORK:
BSR would like to work with a single contractor from concept to implementation; however, individuals with experience in only a
particular aspect of the project (e.g. graphic design, coding) are still encouraged to apply.

DUE DATES:
Production schedule: Non-functioning draft due: Feb. 20, 2008; functioning draft: Mar. 20, 2008. Final Delivery Due: Apr. 4, 2008.

REQUIRED PROPOSAL ELEMENTS
Please include the following information in a 2-3 page build plan:
Executive summary – what web design experience do you have (samples recommended), and why does this project interest you specifically?;
Approach and Methodology – what technologies and software do you anticipate using for this project?;
Project Management Approach – at what intervals do you intend to complete portions of this project?;
Deliverables – what files will be provided to BSR upon completion, and what restrictions will be placed upon the use of these materials?;
Budget – We ask that designers submit budgets along with their proposals; and while this will be a fully funded project, we remind them that we are a non-commercial radio station with limited resources, and thus, price will be a factor in our decision.

BSR's RIGHTS
BSR, Brown Student and Community Radio reserves the right to: Withdraw this RFP and discontinue this project without obligation or explanation; Reject any or all offers and discontinue this project without obligation or liability to prospective consultant(s); Accept a proposal other than the lowest priced offer; Award more than one contract for completion of this project.

Please submit proposals to info@bsrlive.com.

SHOWTIME'S BROTHERHOOD PICKED UP FOR THIRD SEASON

This comes to us from:

Steven Feinberg, Executive Director
Rhode Island Film & Television Office
One Capitol Hill, 3rd Floor
Providence, RI 02908
401-222-3456 PH
401-222-3018 FAX

The Rhode Island Film & Television Office is very proud to announce that BROTHERHOOD, the critically acclaimed winner of a 2007 Peabody award, has been picked up for a third season and will continue to be shot on location in Rhode Island. The drama stars Jason Isaacs, Jason Clarke, Annabeth Gish and Fionnula Flanagan and was created by Blake Masters. It is Executive Produced by Blake Masters, Henry Bromell and Elizabeth Guber Stephen.

BROTHERHOOD marked the first Showtime series to receive exposure on a broadcast network when its' corporate sibling CBS aired the pilot in primetime, and is the first television series to be filmed entirely in the State of Rhode Island. The premium cable network has ordered eight more episodes to be shot on location in Providence and East Providence, as well as other towns and cities within the Ocean State.

" 'BROTHERHOOD' is one of our shining hours at Showtime - a drama series that is among the highest-quality shows offered anywhere on television," stated Showtime's Entertainment President Robert Greenblatt.

Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Film & Television Office, welcomes the groundbreaking series BROTHERHOOD back to the Ocean State, adding, "Historically, this is the first television series to be filmed entirely in Rhode Island. It highlights what a remarkable success can occur when city and state officials work in conjunction with the private sector to foster a healthy environment for creative talents to shine. The return of BROTHERHOOD will provide additional opportunities for our talented and dedicated local workforce. In the previous two seasons, BROTHERHOOD has employed over 300 local full-time crew members and produced more than 225 speaking roles for local actors, along with approximately 3,000 extra and walk-on roles. I would like to extend my gratitude to the Showtime executives, producers, cast and crew for making our beautiful state their location of choice."

In 2005, the General Assembly passed aggressive motion picture and television tax incentive legislation to bring more movie and TV productions to Rhode Island.

Governor Donald L. Carcieri signed that legislation into law.

"The decision to film a third season of BROTHERHOOD in Rhode Island is a tribute to a good story and a great place to tell it," Governor Carcieri said. "Rhode Island is proud to welcome this project home, and the State Film and Television office should be credited for putting our State in front of the Hollywood decision makers."

Speaker of the House William J. Murphy, who sponsored the incentive along with President of the Senate Joseph A. Montalbano, said, "It's great news that Showtime has decided to shoot a third season of BROTHERHOOD entirely in Rhode Island. The production was the first one to take advantage of the General Assembly's film and television tax credit legislation, which has been a tremendous success. We welcome them back to film more scenes in our House chamber and offices."

"It is exciting to have Showtime's BROTHERHOOD back in Rhode Island for the filming of its third consecutive season," said President of the Senate Joseph A. Montalbano (D - Dist. 17, Lincoln, North Providence, Pawtucket). "For two years Showtime has experienced the numerous benefits of filming in Rhode Island first hand, and it goes without saying that the on-location production has lent a significant authenticity to the program. Our state's small size and big beauty have made Rhode Island an attractive shooting location for multiple productions, both large and small, in the few short years since we adopted film tax incentives. We look forward to many more years of hosting BROTHERHOOD and other productions here, which in turn will bring more jobs and other opportunities to all Rhode Islanders."

Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline remarked upon hearing the news, "I congratulate Blake Masters and the entire crew of BROTHERHOOD for a great achievement in an incredibly competitive industry. BROTHERHOOD is a tremendous source of good, steady jobs that pay well for our local actors and production professionals. It has been a pleasure to work closely with the BROTHERHOOD team at every level of city government and we welcome them back for a third year."

The Rhode Island Film & Television Office is currently hosting HACHIKO, starring award winners Richard Gere and Joan Allen. The motion picture is being directed by Academy award nominee Lasse Hallstrom. HACHIKO is filming primarily in Bristol, Woonsocket and the University of Rhode Island.

Most recently, the Twentieth Century Fox/Spyglass romantic comedy feature film 27 DRESSES, starring Katherine Heigl and filmed primarily in Rhode Island in 2007, opened in theaters across the nation on Friday, January 18, 2008 and earned over $22 million in its first weekend. It will be distributed to a worldwide audience in the next few weeks.

The Rhode Island Film & TV Office is a division of The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. For additional information on any of the past or current productions filming in Rhode Island, please visit our website at www.film.ri.gov.

The Official Creative Television of Rhode Island on You Tube

This comes from RIFC Member, Dennis: (CR8TVofRI@aol.com)

Once I build this new channel, it will be the official Creative Television of Rhode Island channel on YouTube. (NON-PROFIT)

CTRI will have more flexibility to seek donations, but It still can only handle small files. We have always stood out at www.ctri.org because I put hour-long video programs on that site as early as 2003.

I'm really going to need some web site development help soon. We have quite a bit of assets.....including, www.ctri-webstation.org and ctri-webstation.com.....which I haven't put anything on.

It's a shame that few people can imagine how much CTRI has of Rhode Island life at the end of the 20th century. The tapes will be rendered useless, simply by deterioration by time.

If you have any ideas to save them....sing out......when we meet....... I'm looking at Friday, January 11, at The Blues Cafe if it's open, if not, I'll make it easy on myself...Billy Goode's Give me feedback on this and what time.
HAPPY NEW YEAR to YOU ALL !!!

OPEN CALL FOR FILM SUBMISSIONS

The Boston Cinema Census (BCC) is an annual short film screening event - a survey of the most interesting and innovative short works created by New England filmmakers—students, professionals, artists, and film enthusiasts alike.

Throughout its history the BCC has proven to be a key launching pad for New England filmmakers. Past BCC films have gone on to strong festival runs, moving next to festivals such as the New York Film Festival, SXSW and the Tribeca Film Festival. The films presented at the BCC each year span the interests of narrative, documentary and experimental film. It is a vehicle for emerging visual artists to demonstrate their place in the local filmmaking community and an opportunity for audiences to experience current trends in local filmmaking and witness the creative aspirations of their makers.

For more information, please visit www.bostoncinemacensus.org or contact us via e-mail at info@bostoncinemacensus.org. You can also submit through www.withoutabox.com

As always, BCC 7 is hosted by the historic Brattle Theatre in Cambridge, MA!

Choose A New Name For The New England Film Movement

This comes to us from The New England Film Movement:

Let the name race begin!

We will skip the melodrama and get down to business. Our objective as you know, given our fast growth across New England, is to choose a new name for Beanywood (formerly known as the Boston Film Movement) that conveys our representation all across the thirteen states. We want to also be a bridge for an even larger future.

We asked for your suggestions for a new domain name, and you sent us an incredible number of great suggestions, and we're thankful. Now it's time to vote and have an impact on the future of New England Motion Media! Give some consideration to the choices listed below and decide what you think would best represent the growing community that you are an active part of.

newfilmnation.com - Why? Easy to remember, conveys the excitement and potential power of the region. It also conveys a regional connection and a bridge to the future.

massivefilm.com - "Unstoppable" A statement of the massive power moving the New England Film scene forward.

cinaptic.net - "Connecting" From Greek sunaptos, joined together; this term expresses the essential connecting that is needed for cinema to exist.

At this step we are not including the name of the person who suggested each, to avoid it becoming a popularity contest, and to keep it focused on choosing the best name. We want it to convey vibrance, the region, the future and for it to be easy to remember. We have narrowed your many suggestions to just to three. Yet, once voted for and selected, the winning name will bring to its "suggester" great recognition for their important contribution. This brings us to you. We need your votes to see what you'd like to represent you.

Send your votes NOW to thefuture@beanywood.com. The voting will close in just FIVE days.

Also, Mark the date Wednesday, January 30th on your calendar for the New England Film Movement's networking event at the Wonderbar in Allston, MA. We will update you with details.

In addition, one of our strongest supporters from the beginning, Imagine Magazine, is having their yearly awards celebration THIS Tuesday. It is their major event every year. It is an excellent networking event, and usually worth every penny. To get your tickets NOW go to: http://www.imaginenews.com/reservations.html

Though they've been called various names over the years ("First Wednesday" screenings, "the independent producer group", the "CID/AIVFsalon" and now "Filmmakers Workshop")- they've continually provided an antidote to that most pervasive of independent filmmaking occupational hazards- isolation.

Some of you may remember when these meeting were held in members homes or when they were in the CID office in Newton. Each meeting, screening or workshop has featured talk and socializing. On the 16th, we'll do both as we look back and forward, as we explore the documentary then and now.

Have an artifact or a story to share? Bring it! Ready to talk about the impact of changing technology on the documentary form? What looks fresh, new and innovative to you? What inspires you that you are bringing to your new/next film? What are the forces that are at work changing how you work and how are you adapting? We'll share our thoughts, musings and practical concerns as we delve into these and other questions salon style.

We hope you'll join us for this special salon evening.

Another Request from Justin Sulham:

In the event that you haven't already heard, I'm shooting a documentary on health and fitness, and how it can make for a better lifestyle in the lives of others. The film is called Without Limits (formerly Maxxed Out)!

Things are flowing smoothly with this film, WAAF (a rock radio station in Boston) is considering support for the film, as is Tap Out clothing! Golds Gym has supported my efforts in getting this thing done! Amazing things for the New Year are coming together!!!

If you, or a friend or loved one has a story to tell related to health and fitness, email me at acsaproductions@gmail.com, or see my myspace page at www.myspace.com/justinsulhamfilms.

I'm also looking for crew to help with the filming, (see contact info above) we have most of what we need but I am very interested in bringing new faces on board, my last shoot was a success, as was the one before that, this will be no different!!!

Looking forward to hearing from you, and wishing you all a safe and happy New Year!!!

OPEN CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS!! JOIN THE RANKS.

Do You Have A Fitness Related Story To Tell?

From RIFC Member Justin Sulham:

I am sending you this email for one reason, a reason very special and very important to me! I am currently working on my first feature length film, a documentary on health and fitness and it's impact on men and women in America today! It's impact on the other elements of peoples live's outside of fitness, such as increased confidence...and so on...

I have several people whom I have been privileged to sit down and speak with regarding this project, and have heard some amazing, motivational and all in all REAL LIFE SURVIVOR STORIES, people who have suffered great personal loss and found a way, through a healthier lifestyle, to keep on going!!!

My goals were athletic based, but after a life-altering accident, was forced to journey in search of a new path, and through this path found myself behind the camera making an effort to tell other peoples amazing stories!!!

Please email ACSAPRODUCTIONS@GMAIL.COM with stories you have relevant to this topic, no story is too big or too small!
I am accepting submissions for this until late February 2008, maybe even earlier if I find my top 5 as only 5 people will be featured in the film, EVERY SINGLE OTHER STORY will be given the same attention and care and shown across Massachusetts on my television show, as well as streamed on several websites!!

In Good Health,
Justin Sulham.

IRS Reminder For Charities

An Important reminder as the RIFC grows and becomes involved in more diverse activities. We do fall into the charitible, non-profit category.

(from an accounting newsletter)

501(c) 3's Role in Campaign

The prohibition against political campaign activity has been in effect for more than half a century and bars certain tax exempt organizations from campaigning on behalf of, or in opposition to, political candidates. The reality is that federal law prohibits charities (and churches) from becoming directly or indirectly involved in campaigns of political candidates. However, these organizations can engage in advocating for or against issues and, to a limited extent, ballot initiatives or other legislative activities.
"The political contests, especially for president, are starting earlier than usual. The IRS, as it has in the past, wants to remind charities and churches of the ban on political campaign activity. We also want to urge nonprofit and religious organizations to review the guidance we have issued to help them avoid any problems," said Steven T. Miller, Commissioner of IRS' Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division.

The goal of the IRS is to educate the leadership of these organizations to help them stay within the legal boundaries. In this regard, IRS Revenue Ruling 2007-41 outlines a number of scenarios to help charities and churches understand the ban on political campaign activity and actions that may arise. This ruling is available on the IRS web site (http://www.irs.gov/) or you may email me and I will send it along to you.

In addition to the revenue ruling, the IRS has other helpful information for churches and charities on its website. For example, IRS Publication 1828, Tax Guide for Churches and Religious Organizations, contains a discussion of the law affecting political campaign activity by churches and religious institutions.

If you have questions or would like to discuss further, please contact our Not-for-profit Services Team at www.TrustedAdvisors@KahnLitwin.com.
