Artists' Exchange Announces March Gallery Opening

Cranston, RI – The Artists' Exchange announces its March Gallery Opening, a display of works by Russian American painter Tatyana Eliseeva. The opening will take place Sunday, March 9, 2008 from 4-6 pm at The Artists' Exchange on 50 Rolfe Square in Cranston.

Fascinated by the Renaissance painters, Eliseeva endeavors to emulate Rembrandt's technique of applying multiple layers of paint to the canvas, resulting in a richness of color and depth. Her paintings provide a nostalgic glimpse of the Renaissance with its sumptuous costumes and colorful pageantry. Eliseeva is fascinated by the ambivalent character of the jester and often incorporates masks into her paintings to evoke philosophical expression.

Commenting on her body of work, Eliseeva says, "I realize there is a process of creation going on in my soul. As I paint, I gain more understanding of that dynamic process. Each canvas becomes the materialization of the relationship between me and the outside world. My paintings are in effect love pictures, songs of praise for the innocence of youth, the glory of women and the mystery of nature."

Eliseeva's paintings will be on display at the Artists' Exchange through the month of March. The Artists' Exchange is located at 50 Rolfe Square in Cranston, RI.

www.machineswithmagnets.org Friday, February 22nd, 7:00-9:00pm
(Gallery opens at 3:00 pm)

Featuring Films By:

Film & Video Fellowship Winner Kendall Moore - Moore is a professor of Journalism and Film Media at the University of Rhode Island. She has been a field producer and reporter for ABC News/Discovery Health, PBS, and Reuters and she is the recipient of two Fulbright Scholarships. Her documentary films have explored a range of topics including: the cross-cultural factors that expose women of African descent to the HIV/AIDS virus, the issue of sovereignty for Rhode Island’s Narragansett Indian tribe, and the cultural significance of hair in the black community.

Film & Video Fellowship Merit Award Winners Matt Brinkman & Xander Marro - Matt Brinkman & Xander Marro are Providence based artists who create prints, music, sculptures, installations, puppets, movies, and movies-starring-puppets, together and on their own. Their most recent collaboration is a single-frame film barrage of DIY living quarters, puppeteer frontiers, too many cats, silkscreen explosions, portable cookstoves, zine libraries, drum kits, and more - all to the discordant squall of their manic sonar hearts.

New Genres Fellowship Merit Award Winner Ju-Pong Lin - Laundry, neighborhoods, and the mundane stuff of human existence move from periphery to center in Ju-Pong Lin’s participatory performances. She figuratively and literally knits together communities through extraordinary stories of ordinary people. She also parents two children and teaches Interdisciplinary Art at Goddard College.

This comes to us from Chuck Slavin:

"Hello Friends,

I have currently been in contact with Representatives from the Weymouth Movie Studio project. I would like to help speed the push of legislation through to allow a new film studio to be built in Weymouth, Ma.

This Studio Complex would allow movies to be filmed year round in Boston and adjacent communities. This complex would also create 1,200 new high paying jobs for the surrounding community.

I ask that you please contact the Governor’s office and tell him that you fully support the legislation that will allow the studio to be built.

I have added this link here for easy access… http://www.mass.gov/?pageID=gov3utilities&sid=Agov3&U=Agov3_contact_us

The 2008 URI Graduate Student Conference

This comes to us from:

Rob LeBlanc, Ph.D. cand.
Organizing Committee
2008 URI Graduate Student Conference

I’m contacting you as part of my work on the organizing committee of an exciting upcoming event: the 2008 URI Graduate Student Conference to be held on March 29, 2008 at the main campus of the University of Rhode Island in Kingston. This will be our second annual conference and it represents an opportunity for graduate students from all disciplines to come together to share their work under the theme of Space, Place, and Imagination.

The reason that I am writing to you at the Rhode Island Film Collaborative is that this event promises to be especially interesting for filmmakers and film scholars in the area. Not only are film scholars presenting their scholarly work at the event, but our keynote speakers for this year’s conference are both important figures in the film industry. Deborah Davis, who will serve as our first speaker, is an author, historian, and veteran film executive who has worked with Warner Bros., Columbia TriStar, Disney, Miramax, and the William Morris Agency. Her husband Mark Urman, who will be our second keynote speaker, is the head of US theatrical distribution for THINKFilm, Inc. He has overseen the acquisition and distribution of such successful films as Spellbound, Gerry, Primer, Half Nelson, Murderball, Down in the Valley, Bright Young Things, and Born Into Brothels. These two keynote addresses promise to offer some fascinating insights into the film and publishing industries. We are currently working on having some portions of the conference filmed by URI film students for possible public television showings at a later date.

Please feel free to publicize this exciting event to anyone in the Rhode Island film community who might be interested. If you should become aware of anyone who might wish to contribute to our ongoing fundraising efforts, please also feel free to contact us about this. Again, the main purpose of this e-mail is simply to make you aware of an exciting film-related event coming to Rhode Island on March 29. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at robleblanc@comcast.net or to visit our website at: http://www.uri.edu/artsci/eng/english_ NEW/Graduate/GradConference2008/conference%20page.pdf.

We hope to have a complete schedule of events and further information about our keynote addresses available soon.

Boston Is Ready To Get Back In The Act

By Carol Beggy and Mark Shanahan
Globe Staff / February 12, 2008

The moment word came that the Hollywood writers' strike was about to end, the local film community started buzzing about how soon work could begin on "The Fighter," the big-budget movie about "Irish" Micky Ward starring Mark Wahlberg and Brad Pitt. Once the strike is officially over, final rewrites can be done on the script, and the crews can get back on a schedule that would allow filming to begin in Lowell by the fall. Other films, however, have continued along. On tap to begin filming here in a few weeks is "The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past," which stars Jennifer Garner and Matthew McConaughey and a cast that includes Anne Archer, Michael Douglas, Emma Stone, and Lacey Chabert. Kevin James's comedy "Mall Cop" is expected to start filming in the area this spring. Kate Hudson's coming back to Boston to film another movie: "Bride Wars," costarring Anne Hathaway. Filming for the comedy - about two best friends who become, you guessed it, enemies after they schedule their weddings for the same day - is expected to start in the area late next month. Director Gary Winick, who shot the pilot for "Lipstick Jungle," has been in the area scouting for locations. Also coming to town to film is "Sexual Healing," the Marvin Gaye biopic with "Law & Order" star Jesse L. Martin as the late singer and "The Sopranos" boss James Gandolfini as his agent. That flick, which also is filming in Los Angeles and Belgium, will be in the area by mid-April. And "The Proposal," starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, is expected next month in Gloucester, which will be subbing for Alaska in scenes.

Amy Beth Presents

Amy Beth Presents TV show on COX cable TV began airing on January 10, 2006 every Tuesday afternoon on channel 18 at 3:30-4:00pm in Rhode Island. AmyBeth hosts & produces the show. She also performs on it and has various guests in a music mag setting. Shows are usually filmed at various locations.

Artists' Exchange To Host Swan Day

Swan Day, a New International Holiday Celebrating Female Artists

On Saturday, March 29, 2008, The Artists' Exchange, located on Rolfe Street in Cranston, will be alive with song, sights, and inspiration, each with just one thing in common: all their creators are women. As the host of Swan Day (Support Women Artists Now), a new international holiday designed to increase awareness of female artists, The Artists' Exchange will showcase and celebrate the work of female artisans, visual artists, filmmakers and performers.

Internationally, Swan Day will be an annual event taking place on the last Saturday of Women's History Month (March). As a symbol of international solidarity, there will be events all over the world featuring women artists on SWAN Day. 2008 marks the first year of this annual event.

SWAN Day at The Artists' Exchange will be a day-long festival featuring women from a wide variety of disciplines. Artisans will have booths to showcase their work, while performing artists will be featured throughout the day. Completing the day's line-up will be screenings by fearless femmes in film. There will also be a raffle which will include items by local woman-owned businesses in Rhode Island.

This grass-roots festival is being spearheaded by Toni Pennacchia of MergingArts Productions and members of Anne's Cordial, a Providence-based band who play a blend of blues, folk, rock, and bossa nova. The members of this trio are Erin Reed Ferenbaugh, a harpist and vocalist; Eva Kendrick, a composer and singer who writes original music for the band; and Natalie Markward, a singer and blues guitarist who arranges the music for the band.

By focusing attention on the work of women artists, SWAN Day will help people imagine what the world might be like if women's art and perspectives were fully integrated into all of our lives. The long-term goal of SWAN Day is to inspire communities around the world to find new ways to recognize and support women artists as a basic element of civic planning.

Performers hale from near and far, including New Hampshire's award-winning composer/pianist Deborah Wyndham, who has performed live on NPR; Connecticut's precocious talent Porter Singer; and Rebecca Hart, a Brown University alum who returns to Providence to headline this event. Her band the Rebecca Hart Project won the WBRU Rock Hunt and who earned Best Female Vocals and Best Song from the Providence Phoenix. She has since moved to New York, where she has had a successful career performing extensively in Los Angeles, New York and Ireland.

New and familiar faces to the Providence music scene are also on tap, such as Allysen Callery, whose CD Hopey was in the Top Picks list of the Providence Phoenix for 2007; Boston's American short story folk singer-songwriter, Thea Hopkins, whose song "Jesus Is on the Wire" was recorded by Peter, Paul and Mary; and experimental pianist Sharon Crumrine with Betty Widerski on electric violin.

Other performances include the RI Raging Grannies, poetry by Laurie Robertson-Laurant, vocalist Ellen Santaniello, veena player Durga Krishnan, and performances by a classical a cappella ensemble.

Artisans include Diana Brennan, a photographer and printmaker, Jyll Ethier-Mullen of the whimsical online shop Sickfeet, and Mi OK Song Bruining, an illustrator whose work reflects her life as a Korean adoptee in America.

SWAN Day will run from 11-9pm. Admission will be $10 for adults and $5 for children under 16. The Artists' Exchange is located at 50 Rolfe Street in Cranston. For more information abut SWAN Day RI, please contact Project Coordinator Eva Kendrick at 774-526-5093 or swandayri@gmail.com).You can learn more about Anne's Cordial at www.annescordial.com.

Rhode Island Welcomes HACHIKO: A DOG STORY

Major film shoot takes place in the Ocean State based on true Japanese story.

Rhode Island welcomes HACHIKO: A DOG STORY, which is filming entirely in-state. This heart-warming family story is directed by Academy Award nominee Lasse Hallstrom (CIDER HOUSE RULES, CHOCOLAT, THE HOAX) and stars Richard Gere and Joan Allen (BOURNE Trilogy, THE CONTENDER).

At a recent press conference hosted by the RI Film and Television Office, Gere mentioned that he and Lasse had considered locations closer to their home base in New York. But it was the attractiveness of the RI film tax credits that convinced them to shoot their film here.

HACHIKO is based on the true story of a Japanese professor and his adoption of an abandoned dog who becomes his best friend, a relationship that changes both of their lives as they form an unbreakable bond. The production is currently filming in Bristol, Woonsocket, and URI Kingston.
