Connecticut Production Coalition

From CT Productions:
TO: Friends of the Connecticut Entertainment Industry
FR: Connecticut Production Coalition Founding Members (See Founding Members below)

With the current worldwide financial crisis unfolding around us, nearly everybody agrees that there has never been a more important time to diversify our state economy in order to thrive in the 21st century. And you can help by adding your name to a new coalition to build the Connecticut film and digital media industries. It is free and simple to join.

In 2006, the State of Connecticut took an important step in achieving the goal of diversification by creating a 30% transferable film, TV and digital media tax credit incentive program in order to spur development of new industry in our state. The program has provided an excellent start in the long process of firmly establishing this new industry, but there is still a significant amount of work to be done. Though the effects are really just beginning to kick in, we’ve already seen a wide variety of businesses flourish, new jobs created, and infrastructure built. Going forward, a permanent new industry will be established and the whole State will benefit from a stronger, more diverse economy, a richer culture, and of course, increased tax revenues.

To support the State’s efforts, a group of us has banded together to form the Connecticut Production Coalition, and it is our hope that you’ll join us.

With CPC, it is our goal to bring anyone and everyone together who has benefited or sees the opportunity to benefit in the future from this incentive program. This is not just limited to those who work directly in the industry, but includes any person or business that serves or has the potential to serve the industry. The benefits are distributed among a wide variety of businesses and we want to make sure that every voice of support is heard. By unifying, we will be able to speak strongly of the important work that is being done to build this industry and improve the State’s economy. Again, we are writing to ask you to join us in this effort.

It is free to join the Coalition, and you can opt-out at any time if you choose to. We want this to be as inclusive as possible so that our State leaders understand just how many people have been positively impacted by this program and the potential it has to serve as an economic pillar for the state, especially as the Governor and Legislature make decisions concerning the current overall budget shortfalls.

Once you are a member, you will receive a Quarterly Newsletter with information on current and expected productions, upcoming events, major facilities announcements, legislative issues, calls to action, stories from coalition members, job opportunities in the industry, etc. You will also get invitations to Coalition networking events of which we hope to have many!

Connecticut Production Coalition Mission Statement:
Together, we are committed to building a strong, robust and sustainable film, television and digital media industry in Connecticut. We come together on a bipartisan basis to support and promote the value of this industry in Connecticut to markets worldwide, state lawmakers, the media, and other related industries.

On our website (www.productionct.com) you can find a Fact Sheet to give you more background, and a Coalition Resolution detailing the mission of CPC and its members.
We will keep you posted in the coming weeks as we issue statewide and targeted local press releases.

We hope that you will give serious consideration to joining the Connecticut Production Coalition, and please forward to friends and colleagues to urge them to join as well. Together, we can help build a strong, robust and sustainable film, television and digital media industry in Connecticut. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you from the founding members...

ON THE LAKE SCREENS AT HARVARD COLLEGE

November 16, 2008
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –– A nearly full house people braved cold, rainy weather last Thursday to attend the second of three scheduled test screenings of ON THE LAKE: Life and Love in a Distant Place, a documentary movie about the tuberculosis epidemic in America in the 1900s and globally today.

Filmmakers David Bettencourt and G. Wayne Miller spoke at the showing of ON THE LAKE, which is scheduled for PBS broadcast on March 23, 2009. The movie will premiere at the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket, R.I., at 8 p.m. on Feb. 13.

Among those in Thursday’s audience were Barbara Parkos and C. Gale Perkins, two TB survivors who tell their stories of long stays at sanatoriums in the movie. In a post-screening interview, Parkos told The Harvard Crimson that watching the film for the first time was a powerful emotional experience:

“Parkos said the film brought back memories of living in a sanitarium, where she was forced to sleep outside in an attempt to combat the disease,” the paper reported. “Watching scenes of beds lined up on outdoor porches ‘brought it back so vividly I felt cold.’ ” (Full Crimson article at http://www.thecrimson.com/article.aspx?ref=525344)

ON THE LAKE is the first production from Eagle Peak Media, a multi-media company founded in May by Bettencourt, the award-winning director of YOU MUST BE THIS TALL: The Story of Rocky Point Park, and Miller, journalist and author of seven books. Two more Eagle Peak documentaries are in pre-production.

The first test screening of ON THE LAKE was held last month in Pittsburgh, before an audience of nearly 100 people. The final test screening will be before a private audience on Dec. 3.

Education Department Seeks Entries in “High School Video Contest”

For any of you who are or know High School Teachers/Students:
Elliot Krieger, Communications – (401) 222-8471

All seniors in public high schools in Rhode Island are invited to test their creative skills by submitting ideas for a television public-service announcement (PSA) focused on a community or social issue important to teens. This “High School Video Contest” is being offered in conjunction with the rollout of the new Rhode Island Diploma System.

Governor Donald L. Carcieri’s Office and a number of Rhode Island education agencies are sponsoring the contest with the support of television station ABC6, Ronzio’s Pizza & Subs, and Twelve Acres Restaurant of Smithfield.

“Our new high-school Diploma System encourages students’creativity, imagination, and the active pursuit of areas of personal interest,” said Governor Carcieri. “This contest provides an opportunity for public high-school seniors to venture outside the classroom and into the real world of communications.”

The Governor also explained that this type of partnership between the public and private sectors is critical to the effectiveness of the new high-school diploma system. “We need our Rhode Island businesses to become active participants in our education system,” the Governor said. “I applaud ABC6, Ronzio’s, and Twelve Acres for stepping forward with their generous assistance.”

Here’s how the contest works:

Students graduating in 2009 (this year’s seniors) may submit “storyboard” concepts (storyboards are rough illustrations depicting the PSA action) accompanied by a script or narrative along with a rough-cut video of their vision for the spot. Submissions must focus on community or social issues that are important to teens, such as smoking, drinking, drug use, drinking and driving, teen violence, bullying, peer pressure, depression, cliques, the environment, or community service.

The first-place award recipient (seniors can enter individually or in teams of two, with the approval of their high school) will win a $1,000 Ronzio College Scholarship (split among both students should a team win) and ultimately work with ABC6 to produce the TV spot, which will air on Channel 6, the Rhode Island Cable News Channel, and on abc6.com. Recognition also will be given to second and third place, as well as honorable mention. The awards will be presented at a reception to be held at Twelve Acres. Seniors also have the option to include this work, whether they win or not, as part of their senior project or portfolio.

Telephone 401-222-4600 Fax 401-222-6178 TTY 800-745-5555 Voice 800-745-6575

Storyboards and video rough cuts are due by January 31, 2009. Details can be found on WaytogoRI.org, under “New High School Diploma System.”

The Rhode Island Diploma System was approved in January 2003 and amended in September 2008 by the Board of Regents for Elementary and Secondary Education. To receive a diploma from a public high school in Rhode Island, students must, among other requirements, demonstrate proficiency in six core areas of learning by applying skills and knowledge at a rigorous level.

“The Regents established the new Diploma System in order to improve graduation rates and to better prepare our students for the challenges of the 21st-century workplace,” said Peter McWalters, Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education. “The video contest provides an opportunity for our students to apply their classroom experience, their problem-solving skills, their teamwork, and their creativity.”

State offices and departments working together on the Rhode Island high-school Diploma System communications effort are: Governor Donald L. Carcieri’s Office, the Board of Regents and the Rhode Island Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Rhode Island Board of Governors for Higher Education, the Rhode Island Higher Education Assistance Authority, and the Association of Independent Colleges & Universities of Rhode Island.

FILMDANCE SHOWS OFF ALL THE RIGHT MOVES

New Film Festival Seminar Set for January 17.

NEWPORT, RI -- In our YouTube society, it would appear that everyone is a
filmmaker. But if you are a serious filmmaker looking for your big break, film
festivals are still the way to go and have stricter guidelines. So how does a
serious filmmaker know if their work is truly ready for the festival circuit?

"Most emerging filmmakers are so absorbed by the creative process and getting their films finished," says Eleyne Austen Sharp, executive director of Master Filmmakers. "They don't spend much time considering how to prepare their film for a debut on the festival circuit." FilmDance is the new film festival
seminar presented by Master Filmmakers, which was established to help filmmakers develop a strategy for getting their film prepared to enter the film festival arena.

According to Sharp, there are at least several hundred film festivals offered in
the United States alone, and most require entry fees, which can get quite
expensive for the filmmaker on a tight budget. "FilmDance is a unique
opportunity to learn from the experts exactly which festivals to include on your
'dance' card and which ones to ignore."

FilmDance will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2009 at Kay Studios, 66 Valley Street in East Providence, from 10AM-4PM. The full day seminar will feature four moderated panel discussions to address Marketing, Fundraising, Networking and Submission issues. Panelists will include filmmakers, film festival winners and organizers.

Master Filmmakers is a division of The Film Community, the producers of Kid
Filmmakers educational programs. In addition to FilmDance, Master Filmmakers hosts a variety of seminars geared to filmmaking professionals and those looking to "break into" the film industry. In addition to FilmDance, The Film Community will be offering additional programming throughout 2009 in connection with Kay Studios.

The cost of the full-day FilmDance program is $65.00. Early bird registration
is $45.00 if registration is received before December 1, 2008. To register for
FilmDance, call 401-294-4922 or visit The Film Community's website at
www.thefilmcommunity.org.

"On the Lake" Second Test Screening

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. –– The second of three scheduled test screenings of ON THE LAKE: Life and Love in a Distant Place, a documentary movie about the tuberculosis epidemic in America in the 1900s and globally today, will be held will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 13, at Harvard Hall, Harvard College.

Filmmakers David Bettencourt and G. Wayne Miller will speak at the showing of ON THE LAKE, which is scheduled for PBS broadcast in March 2009. This showing is free and open to the public. The movie will premiere at the Stadium Theatre in Woonsocket, R.I., on Feb. 13.

While less of a public health issue in America today than in the early 1900s, when much of the film is set, it remains epidemic on the planet. Tuberculosis is the number-two infectious disease killer globally today, according to the World Health Organization, with nearly two million deaths and nine million new cases in 2006, the last year for which data is available. The only disease with a higher worldwide mortality is HIV/AIDS.

Audience reaction from the Pittsburgh screening suggests that the filmmakers have succeeded in bringing powerful emotion and personal stories to the screen. “Our aim was not to produce a ‘disease-of-the-week’ movie, but rather a compelling narrative of real people,” Miller said. “Against this tragic backdrop, against the many deaths, we found love stories and stories of triumph.”

Harvard Hall is located at the main entrance to Harvard Yard, which is in the center of Harvard Square in Cambridge, Mass.

NIFF's Second Monday series to feature 'A Christmas Tale'

NEWPORT, RI (Oct. 31, 2008) -- Arnaud Desplechin's A Christmas Tale, staring Catherine Deneuve, will be NIFF's Second Monday screening in November.

"Very engrossing, often very funny, like a good, long novel you can't put down... [Chiara Mastroianni's] performance is one of the many gems in this rambunctious, imperfect joy of a movie."
- Ty Burr, Boston Globe

The film, set for limited release on Nov. 14, will have a sneak preview on Monday, Nov. 10, at the Jane Pickens Theater in Newport. NIFF's new Artistic Director, Tom Hall, will be in attendance to talk about the film and take questions following the screening.

Abel and Junon (Deneuve) had two children, Joseph and Elizabeth. Victim of a rare genetic condition, Joseph's only hope was a bone marrow transplant.

As they and Elizabeth were incompatible, his parents conceived a third child in the hope of saving their son. But little Henri too was unable to help his brother, and Joseph died at the age of seven. The Vuillard family has never recovered. Many years have passed, and family relationships are more strained than ever. In particular, those between Elizabeth, authoritarian head of the family and Henri, a cynical drop out who divides his time between women and drink.

After a violent argument, Elizabeth banishes her feckless brother, cutting him off from his nephew, her son Paul - a tortured adolescent beset by serious mental problems.

Masterfully directed and acted, by turns savage, bittersweet, darkly comic and unbearably moving, A Christmas Tale shows internationally acclaimed director Arnaud Desplechin at the height of his powers.

What the Critics are Saying:

"A darkly exuberant feast. Now that is a movie!"
- Glenn Kenny

"[Desplechin's] passion for finding new ways to tell old stories are exhilarating... This is a film you don't want to see end, not because the people are so happy but because they are so human and so alive."
- Kenneth Turan, LA Times

Documentary to Premiere on November 19 at Benefit for International Institute

Local filmmakers team with International Institute to chronicle refugees’ journey from Ethiopia to RI

(Providence, Rhode Island – October 10, 2008) -- The journey of a family that spent more than five years in an Ethiopian refugee camp before relocating to Rhode Island is the focus of the upcoming documentary, “Home Across Lands.”

The documentary will premiere on November 19, 2008 at the Columbus Theater in Providence at a benefit for the International Institute of Rhode Island. “Home Across Lands” was commissioned by the International Institute to chronicle the journey of a group of Eritrean-Kunaman refugees making the transition from life in the Shimelba Refugee Camp in Northern Ethiopia to their new home in Rhode Island.

The Kunama featured in the film fled their native Eritrea and spent years in the confines of the camp, until they were granted refugee status by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. The film focuses on their journey to Rhode Island and their journey to becoming self-reliant, invested participants in their new home.

The film was shot over a one year period and features footage and interviews from various locations in Ethiopia and Rhode Island. The experience for the filmmakers was a challenging one as the U.S. State Department had issued a warning for travelers within 50 km of the border between Ethiopia and Eritrea. The refugee camp was located 45 km south of the Eritrean border.

“Our goal was to present viewers with a first-hand visual representation of the journey, while giving a voice to those who live in the camp,” said director John Lavall, who produced the one hour documentary in conjunction with executive producer Mary Copp, cinematographer Jessica Jennings, and editor Julie Lewis/editor.

The film takes viewers on the odyssey from the camp on the arid northern border of Ethiopia and Eritrea to Rhode Island’s Spring House Hotel and Resort on Block Island. “Home Across Lands” illustrates the ways the International Institute bridges the vast divide from life in a refugee camp to life in Rhode Island as they help the Kunama in making sense of apartment living, public transportation, employment and health care, while nurturing their own community as they adapt to a larger and very foreign one.

“We were fortunate to have Bill Shuey, executive director of International Institute of Rhode Island, and Eskinder Negash of U.S. Committee for Refugees and Immigrants to help us navigate the various agencies that are needed to get into these restricted areas,” said Mary Copp. “With their help, we were able to interview Gorashi Menga, his wife Ayange, and several of their relatives in the camp and follow their journey of resettlement as they arrived three weeks later at TF Green Airport in Warwick.”

“Home Across Lands” is a production of Devlo Media and Vision Wink Films. For more information, visit www.devlomedia.com or www.iiri.org.

A Service Available for Making an Actor's Reel

From Jenna Sullivan...
It is a well-known fact that an actor's reel is a stock tool for any actor seriously looking for work or representation. What is slightly less known is that most of us don't have one. It's a Catch 22 - "I can't have a reel until I've done a lot of wide-ranging work, but I can't get that work if Idon't have a reel to show what I can do." On top of that - getting the clips from the producers is an entirely different headache! Right now Actor/Producer, Jenna Sullivan and Director of Photography/EditorExtraordinaire, Christian Kiley are teaming up to offer you a service that is the solution for this common problem. Simply put, they will provide you with scenes for your reel. Scenes will be handpicked with you in mind. A video that showcases your talent and ability will be shot and assembled. What you will end up with is a tool that will be invaluable to you as you cultivate your career. Interested parties can contact Jenna for more information. Jenna can be reached at jenna_sullivan@msn.com.

Casting for "The Intensive" in Boston

FROM: Blythe Pistole, EPA for "The Intensive," a Micro-budget independent feature filming in Boston beginning in November.

"The Intensive"

Tagline:
Last Tango in Paris meets The Piano.

Logline:
What will the film reveal when a Writer, his Mentor, a Director, and his Actress, all insist on the final cut?

Storyline:
A promising writer, Adrian Pallo has his screenplay acquired for an Independent film starring his wife, Suzanne Liu-Pallo. The film's director, Maxwell Haliday, is married to a well known workshop director/ actress "Galena Votros". Suzanne has been critical of Adrian's inability to break free of what she calls his conservative tendencies. His reluctance to explore and expand his main characters' innate demons and conflicts through visual sexual resolution, is stifling his re-write of this project and squandering an opportunity to establish himself as a viable contemporary risk taker while limiting her character's arc.

Max (her proclaimed emotional visionary) sees this as a natural and necessary progression for her character's journey. This has added to their already tremulous relationship. Suzanne insists Adrian take Galena's radically aggressive workshop. He reluctantly submits and soon learns that looking deeply into one's true inhibitions may bring to focus their true desires and rightful direction.

Casting 1 Non-Union Actress/Principal Role for Feature (80 Min.) Drama, Boston Area~*November Shoot*~14 Days + Production duration.

An Absolutely Solid Script.~ "The Intensive", A Serious, Potent, Dialogue Driven Drama. Strong Local Media Connections. High-Level Festival Bound.*Our last short was screened at Cannes this past May and Is courting distribution offers.*

A Couple of F.A.Q.'s:

Q. Will there be any cash payment(s) for this role?
A. No. There is a modest budget. However, food, copy, credit, and some trans.exp. will be supplied for this role.

Q. Will there be partial nudity?
A. Some

Q. Frequent (many, many) scene & character rehearsals?
A. Of course.

Q. Some highly erotic sexually suggestive physical scenes?
A. Yes.

Q. Serious dialogue devoted prep?
A. Definitely. **

Q. Is this a soft core porn film?
A. NO FREAKIN WAY! Erotic, very direct in 2-3 scenes? Yes. Suggestive and relevant in 3-4 scenes? Yes. But this is a relationship drama, and it's driven by character, dialogue, reaction, emotion, situation and story arc as the 100 other scenes reveal.

Long résumés or 100 years experience not required. However, vision, progressive artistic attitude and willingness to listen, consider and contribute are required. We're not looking for script robots or over the top stage types. The dialogue is heavy and interpretation is key.

If interested and feel you could handle this level of commitment, you must send your head shot, résumé, and a note explaining why you feel your attitude and approach may be right for this role. This film will be a career booster.

All replies that do not contain these requirements will be deleted immediately. We know the difficult process we face in casting and producing this project and don't have the will or desire to waste our or your time.

Of course, copy, credit & meals, plus deferred percentage, are included.

Please reply as soon as possible. This project is moving forward fast.
