Local FILMmakers Hope That Their New Project “Kills”!

From: Dave Borges

Cell: 508-328-5300
Email: daveb@endlessspectrumstudios.com

ESS releases their second film, a dark comedy about the misadventures of two hit men.

“What are you gonna stop being my friend because your mommy doesn’t like me?” isn’t exactly the type of line you expect to hear out of the mouth of a contract killer, but it’s exactly what you get in the new short film series by Endless Spectrum Studios.

Clean Livin’, the new ongoing web series from ESS is a dark comedy that takes a closer look at some of the less glamorous moments in the careers Bobby and Vinny; two hit men played by local actors, Joe Siriani and Greg Paul. Released monthly, these shorts are chapters of a much bigger story. “Each episode is snap shot of a moment that happens during a ‘hit’,” Says writer Eric Lebow “and each story arc, or season, is the story of that ‘hit’.” Currently Clean Livin’ is a 4 part series but this is only the tip of the iceberg. “We’ve got the next 5 or 6 episodes written and we’ve talked about ideas for another 4 or 5 on top of that,” Lebow says. “Then if we were ever able to get a real budget, that’s when we’d break out some of the really cool stuff we’ve talked about from day one.”

Endless Spectrum Studios has been around since 2005, and it’s first film release THE SINNING FLESH, A BED TIME STORY garnered the local story tellers some attention back in 2007 when it was screened at the Rhode Island International Horror Film Festival. Since then the RI based company has worked on several different projects for both personal and commercial clients.

ESS invites one and all to screen the first episode of Clean Livin’ ongoing series at http://www.endlessspectrumstudios.com/films/cleanlivin.html and on YouTube.

If you’d like more information on Clean Livin’ or Endless Spectrum Studios please Call Dave Borges at 508-328-5300 or email Dave at daveb@endlessspectrumstudios.com

Synopsis:
About a man, Marco Bishop (Sayed Najem) and his wife, Nicole (Shannon O Brien-Rosciti), whose lives could not be happier. As soul mates, they share a life in love. The Future of the Film Industry

An interesting analysis of the state of filmmaking, delivered at the LA Film Festival by Mark Gill, former head of Miramax, is at this link
http://www.indiewire.com/biz/2008/06/irst_person_fil.html

It is kind of long, but seems insightful.
- Mick Hoegen

Here are selected exerpts:

We've heard "the sky is falling" in the movie business before--notably with the introduction of TV, home video and DVD. On all three occasions, the business survived. And DVDs arguably helped grow the worldwide movie-viewing habit considerably-- even as they threw off a ton of cash. But this time, at least as it relates to independent film, the sky really is falling.

The marginally good news is it won't hit the ground everywhere. The strongest of the strong will survive and in fact prosper. But it will feel like we just survived a medieval plague. The carnage and the stench will be overwhelming.

Here's how bad the odds are: of the 5000 films submitted to Sundance each year-- generally with budgets under $10 million--maybe 100 of them got a US theatrical release three years ago. And it used to be that 20 of those would make money. Now maybe five do. That's one-tenth
of one percent.

Put another way, if you decide to make a movie budgeted under $10 million on your own tomorrow, you have a 99.9% chance of failure.

Those terrible odds for movies under $10 million? Ironically, they get far better if you spend more money. All the financial data I've looked at--and it's a lot--clearly shows that the sweet spot is between $15 and $50 million. But that has a lot to do with being able to pay professionals who know what they're doing to create quality emotional content that has a market. And it has a fair amount to do with the prices that international distributors can afford to pay in the top 12
countries, which is what gives financiers enough comfort to commit capital.

Clearly, only the better films will succeed in the theaters of the future. Certainly the number of releases will drop--by half or more. Probably everyone other than the folks who work on tentpoles will be paid less. The words "theatrical necessity" will take on greater and greater meaning. Probably a lot of theaters will close. But I think the best theaters showing the best films will always have an audience. And the rest of the films will have their premiere in Walmart, or on
your cell phone.

Interestingly enough, in this Darwinian new future, there will absolutely be a premium for good films on tv, pay per view, on-demand, internet--or whatever that large pipe that goes to all of our houses will be called.

Why do I know this? Because one of the big research companies conducted a study recently which gave viewers on-demand everything. No more schedules. No more appointment television. Just tune in anything--any movie, any TV show--at any time. And guess what: the best stuff won out. Hands down.

In a nutshell, the audience is sick & tired of the atrocious but all too familiar version of television on a schedule: 500 channels to choose from, and nothing to watch.

Some of this is purely a function of demography. There actually is a growing audience for quality.

*It's not hard to figure out why: the baby boom is aging. And as they do, their tastes mature. But they don't behave like their parents at the same age. They are smarter, more active, have more disposable income. And because of pay cable, home video and DVD in particular, they've
become much more movie literate-- and more sophisticated in their tastes.

*Traditionally specialized films accounted for 5-6% of tickets sold. In the last few summers, it's been over 10% on average. And that's the season when Hollywood is supposed to dominate and indies are supposed to cower in the corners, waiting for the arrival of fall.

*And to back that up, for the first time in the roughly 20 years I've been looking at this data, more than 10% of the audience now is telling pollsters they prefer independent films.

When the movie business went from tape to digital, we dropped the wholesale price per unit from $65 to $10. And everyone said: "Oh my god, they're killing the business. Our profit margins are ruined." Well, the margin was smaller, but sales exploded. The studios made tens of billions of dollars on the difference. And consumers mostly like what they're getting. So much so that movies are the second-highest rated consumer value for the money. Behind only chicken.

The next big change will be when we start shooting movies to mobile devices in a big way. The wholesale price will drop again--probably to $3 per unit. But we'll sell so many more of them that revenue will explode all over again. This has very favorable implications for getting past piracy problems that helped kill the music business: the charge for downloading a film will land on your phone bill. And the moviemakers can hold the phone companies accountable (whereas now
internet providers duck and hide when we try to pursue them for what amounts to transfer of stolen goods).

ARTISTS REJOICE AS FILMMAKER FRIENDLY FEST CELEBRATES ITS NINTH YEAR

Ninth Annual Pawtucket Film Festival
September 12-14, 18-21

Blackstone Valley Visitor Center
175 Main St.
Pawtucket, RI

Be it from seasoned veterans of independent cinema or local student filmmakers the message is the same: the Pawtucket Film Festival is one of the best.

Filmmakers are happy that this festival offers an alternative to the thousands of cookie cutter film festivals found throughout the world. Over the next two weekends, Sept. 12 through 14 and 18 through 21, the spotlight will be on the theater at the Blackstone Valley Visitors Center in Pawtucket, RI, as filmmakers such as Jim McKay, who has directed for NBC and HBO and who recently spent a month as the featured artist at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, share the stage with Chris Magdalenski of North Providence, a student filmmaker making his second appearance at the fest. The Pawtucket Film Festival celebrates artists and the art of film no matter who you are or what your background.

The Pawtucket Film Festival can truly back up its claim as an "artist first festival." The festival's lead producer and programmer, Rick Roth, does not believe in charging the artists to submit their films as so many other festivals do. According to filmmakers, another refreshing aspect of the festival is there is not a competition amongst the films. This celebration of the art form, as opposed to a competition amongst artists, helps enforce the relaxed atmosphere already present at the festival. Not just a celebration of cinema, the festival even offers an intermission of live music provided by some of the best musical acts in the northeast as well as refreshments at no additional cost to attendees. From political satire and humanity driven documentaries to narrative comedies and experimental films, the Pawtucket Film Festival has it all. "Only the most adventurous of people attend our festival because you never know what you are going to see," says Rick Roth.

Admission is $10 at the door or in advance at www.arttixri.com. Ticket price includes: admission to short and feature films, musical performance, festival t-shirt, and refreshments.

A true supporter of the arts, Rick started the festival in 2000 to help Pawtucket further its arts renaissance as well as bring back its once thriving film community (Pawtucket was once home to eleven operating movie theaters). Now with the additional support of Herb Weiss from the city's Department of Planning and Redevelopment, Rick runs the film festival as a part of the Pawtucket Arts Festival.

If you would like more information about the festival, its filmmakers, or organizers, or to schedule an interview with Rick Roth, please call Anthony Ambrosino at 401.345.9002 or e-mail Anthony at Anthony@SleatherStudios.com. Please visit www.pawtucketartsfestival.org or www.mirrorimage.com.

Artists' Exchange Production Reveals How Socrates Got His Groov(y) Back

Starring RIFC member, Mark Carter.

Cranston, RI – The Artists' Exchange is pleased to welcome audiences to The Black Box Theatre for a psychedelically satirical theatre experience. A modern adaptation of Aristophanes' "The Clouds," a classic Greek comedy, will take the stage on September 11 with a flower-powered storm of philosophical probing.

Rich Morra, Artistic Director of The Artists' Exchange's Black Box Theatre, elected this fall's production as an opportunity to introduce his students to the study of classical theatre, while offering a modernized version of an age-old story to the theatre-going public.

Aristophanes' "The Clouds" centers around an old farmer, Strepsiades, a man from humble beginnings who bemoans the very costly horse-racing hobby of his son Pheidippides, which has left him penniless. In an effort to overcome this financial burden, Strepsiades enrolls his son in the Pondertorium, a school where Socrates teaches, and where Strepsiades hopes his son will learn the art of verbal argument to talk his way out of the debt he has accrued. As the conflict rises, a chorus of women, referred to as "the clouds" serve as moral guides to Strepsiades, giving and withholding rain as a consequence of his choices. What ensues is a satire of academia, poking fun at intellectualism and the beginnings of modern thought.

Morra saw immediate parallels between this clash of old and new school ideas and the conflict brought about by the revolution of the 1960's. For this reason, he decided to claim the decade of free love and free thinking as the setting of the play. Hippie attire and the melodies of popular songs of the 60's add a colorful backdrop to a theme that pervades history: new thinking often frightens people.

"The Clouds" will run September 11-13 and 18-20. All performances are scheduled for 7pm. Tickets are $15. For additional information or to make a reservation, please contact Christina Mealey at 401.490.9475.

Philm Pharm Announcement / OU2 crew/casting Call (paid)

Philm Pharm is a small new collective of filmmakers with a simple mission: to create cool films and have fun doing it. We have an open forum where anyone can suggest stories and bring scripts. Not only do we talk about films but we ACTUALIZE them. We have a number of experienced directors, DPs, writers, and producers on board. Join our group if you enjoy working in a collaborative atmosphere or have an idea for a short that MUST be made. We believe the best form of networking is working and we're looking for more crew, writers, experienced directors, producers, and actors.

Philm Pharm has a number of comedies, horror, and sci-fi shorts in the works. Currently, we're on our third film, OU2 (tentatively titled). We are hoping to appeal to nostalgic videogamers and fans of Office Space. Targeting disgruntle office workers everywhere in a show that doesn't take itself seriously.

OU2 follows the misadventures of a bunch of quirky employees at a video game company that is on the brink of financial meltdown. In episode 1, the company hires a supposed efficiency expert whose consultation does not make any sense and annoys the group.
Some positions are paid/Great opportunity to learn.
