ARTISTS REJOICE AS FILMMAKER FRIENDLY FEST CELEBRATES ITS NINTH YEAR

Ninth Annual Pawtucket Film Festival
September 12-14, 18-21

Blackstone Valley Visitor Center
175 Main St.
Pawtucket, RI

Be it from seasoned veterans of independent cinema or local student filmmakers the message is the same: the Pawtucket Film Festival is one of the best.

Filmmakers are happy that this festival offers an alternative to the thousands of cookie cutter film festivals found throughout the world. Over the next two weekends, Sept. 12 through 14 and 18 through 21, the spotlight will be on the theater at the Blackstone Valley Visitors Center in Pawtucket, RI, as filmmakers such as Jim McKay, who has directed for NBC and HBO and who recently spent a month as the featured artist at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, share the stage with Chris Magdalenski of North Providence, a student filmmaker making his second appearance at the fest. The Pawtucket Film Festival celebrates artists and the art of film no matter who you are or what your background.

The Pawtucket Film Festival can truly back up its claim as an "artist first festival." The festival's lead producer and programmer, Rick Roth, does not believe in charging the artists to submit their films as so many other festivals do. According to filmmakers, another refreshing aspect of the festival is there is not a competition amongst the films. This celebration of the art form, as opposed to a competition amongst artists, helps enforce the relaxed atmosphere already present at the festival. Not just a celebration of cinema, the festival even offers an intermission of live music provided by some of the best musical acts in the northeast as well as refreshments at no additional cost to attendees. From political satire and humanity driven documentaries to narrative comedies and experimental films, the Pawtucket Film Festival has it all. "Only the most adventurous of people attend our festival because you never know what you are going to see," says Rick Roth.

Admission is $10 at the door or in advance at www.arttixri.com. Ticket price includes: admission to short and feature films, musical performance, festival t-shirt, and refreshments.

A true supporter of the arts, Rick started the festival in 2000 to help Pawtucket further its arts renaissance as well as bring back its once thriving film community (Pawtucket was once home to eleven operating movie theaters). Now with the additional support of Herb Weiss from the city's Department of Planning and Redevelopment, Rick runs the film festival as a part of the Pawtucket Arts Festival.
