Local Production of “A Christmas Carol” Gives Trinity "a Run for its Money"

With Over 1,000 Tickets Sold

Cranston, RI – For years, the Black Box Theatre’s annual run of “A Christmas Carol” has happily packed houses at its home at Artists’ Exchange, a nonprofit arts collaborative at 50 Rolfe Square in Cranston. Casts have committed to weekends upon weekends of performances, responding to the growing demands of the theater-going public which is at its largest during the holiday season, a festive mood calling folks in droves to box offices for tickets to various versions of “A Christmas Carol,” “The Nutcracker” and assorted alternative holiday productions. Still, when Artistic Director Rich Morra looked at the count of 1,000 seats at the newly renovated Park Theatre, where Artists’ Exchange had booked a culminating performance after a run of five performances at their home base, the task of filling them seemed a daunting one.

The Black Box Theatre’s intimate house typically seats 27 for performances of “A Christmas Carol” (the theater can accommodate larger audiences for film screenings, as there is no performance space required for the medium), sometimes booking up to 12shows to fulfill the desires of the public. Approximately 30 seats and 12 performances translates to a typical 360 tickets sold. To fill the 1000 seat house at the newly renovated Park Theatre, the Black Box would have to nearly triple their audience.

However, booking a performance at a theater whose uncertain outcome had stirred the interest of an entire community could certainly help reach this lofty goal. Being the first to actually stage a theatrical production in the newly renovated theater after its long-anticipated reopening held quite a bit of promise. Touted as “the show that’s giving the Trinity Rep classic a run for its money,” a quote from New York Times Best-Selling Author and RI Monthly contributor Ann Hood, the growing popularity of The Black Box Theatre’s version of “A Christmas Carol” only added to the recipe for a hopeful sell-out… and sell out it did. With not a ticket left for Saturday, December 19th at RICPA (Rhode Island Center for the Performing Arts at the historic Park Theatre) and still a month to go before the show date, Artists’ Exchange and the Black Box Theatre have elected to extend the run with an additional matinee performance at RICPA on Sunday, December 20th. Initial worries of filling seats have translated to full confidence that this show, too, will sell out. “I’m dumbfounded and thrilled,” says Morra. “This is a really big deal for us, and we’re so excited to share it with a community the Artists’ Exchange and the Black Box Theatre have called ‘home’ for these past five years. The cast can’t wait to get up on that stage to share this story in such a grand way.”

“A Christmas Carol” will open on Thursday, December 10th and will run through Thursday, December 17th in the Black Box Theatre at Artists’ Exchange, closing at RICPA on December 19th and December 20th. All performances are scheduled for 7pm, with the exception of Sunday, 12/13 which will be a matinee performance at 2pm and 12/20 which will be a matinee performance at 3pm. All tickets are $15. Groups of 15 or more will qualify for a reduced ticket price of $10 per ticket.

For those desperate to see the show on December 19th, there remain a very limited number of tickets reserved for guests at a preceding VIP Party from 4:30 to 7pm at Artists' Exchange, hosted by Mayor Allan Fung and Steven Feinberg. The party will include a silent auction, delicious food from local restaurants including Arunothai, Efendi’s Mediterranean Grill, Café Luna and Phu Lam, wine from Jonathan Edwards Winery and beer from Rapscallion Brewery, live entertainment provided by Mark Taber, Linda Succi and the Always on Sunday Ballroom Dancers, and the chorus from “A Christmas Carol,” finishing with a horse-drawn carriage ride down the street to the theater. Tickets to the VIP Party are $75.

Artists’ Exchange is located at 50 Rolfe Square in Cranston. For more information, call 401.490.9475.

everyday life consists of working at the diner as a bus boy, hanging out with his
much younger friends, BeeBee (Gracie Rennick), Bobby (Andrew Cavanaugh, Brandon (Zack Turnquist)and Chu Chu (David Try) and wishing he was Lynn Nutmeg's boyfriend,
who is the owner of the diner. Artie lives with his grandmother (Mary Paolino),
who is a Karate and Tae Kwon Do Freak, and is the only person Artie has to look up to. The Grandma encourages Artie to chase after Lynn and not give up on her. Artie then discovers he has a magical talent. He can make beautiful and amazing mailboxes out of wood. This talent then leads him to this idea that by replacing the damaged mailboxes in Hope Island with new ones, will get in the newspaper and get Lynn's
attention. Although, Lynn (Nicole Trychon) does become interested in this mysterious
person stealing mailboxes, her life becomes a nightmare when her partner in
the diner, Hopkins (Shelly Whittle), decides he wants to take full control of the diner and push Lynn out. Now what does Artie do?

More From Anne Mulhall of LDI CASTING:

Hey there everyone!

In 2007 we asked that you bring an item to the office opening from the wish list
of Elizabeth Buffam Chace Center - a women and children's shelter in Warwick.

HUGE hit.

In 2008 we organized Soldier Care Packages that included items from THAT wish

Another GIANT hit.

This year we're asking that your "ticket" in to LDI's holiday party is an item

Verdi-Corrente Productions, LLC Attaches Young Hollywood to Star in its First Production, PAZ

For interviews contact MIXED MEDIA/Ginny Shea
office: 401 942 8025
mixedmediapromo@cox.net
Images available upon request

As previously announced, Verdi-Corrente Productions (VCP) will produce five major motion pictures in Rhode Island, starting in early 2010. Paz, the company's first project, tells the remarkable, inspirational true story of the comeback of boxer Vinny Pazienza after a devastating neck injury.

Scott Caan, of the Ocean's 11 series, will play the title role. In addition to Ocean's 11, 12 and 13, Scott has appeared in Gone in 60 Seconds, Varsity Blues, Brooklyn Rules and Boiler Room among others. A tough actor, Scott has the swagger and build necessary to convincingly portray the flamboyant boxer.

Chad Verdi, president of VCP who traveled to LA to meet Scott in person stated, "He is the Hollywood version of Vinny Paz. Very few people could play this role. I feel he's the best actor to fill Vinny's shoes. Scott can show the world what Vinny was made of, what he went through on his way to making what is often called "the greatest comeback in sports history." Michael Corrente, who directed Caan in Brooklyn Rules, stated. "I have seen too many actors in boxing films that had very little boxing ability and it always takes me out of the picture. Scott can handle himself very well in the ring as everyone will soon see!"

Another stellar talent, Jerry Ferrara, of the hugely popular HBO series, Entourage, will play Vinny's best friend. Jerry's mass appeal, evident in his portrayal of the likeable "Turtle", on Entourage provides the perfect balance to the tough journey "Paz" undertakes. "Jerry is a very gifted and smart actor who understands this material very well," says Corrente. "Jerry told me Paz was his favorite fighter!"

Joey Fatone, cast as part of Team Paz, appeared in Homie Spumoni, but is best known for his roles in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, The Cooler and as a member of the wildly successful group, N'Sync.

For those unfamiliar with this dramatic, feel-good story, Vinny Pazienza was the relentless boxer and showman who became a popular champion in the late 1980's and early '90's. Weeks after winning his second world championship, his throne atop the boxing world was toppled in a near-fatal car accident. Told he may never walk again, Vinny clung to the relentless spirit that drove him to become champion. With an attitude of "Fight or Die," Vinny regained his mobility and disobeyed doctors orders to build his body back into fighting form. With a mended neck, he re-entered the ring and, incredibly, reclaimed his spot as world champion, inspiring many to claim the Vinny Pazienza story "sport's greatest comeback".

VCP acquired the sole rights to Vinny's story. The upcoming movie was written by Director Glenn Ciano, Peter Conti of Columbia University, and Tom DeNucci, also cast as a member of Team Paz. VCP is considering selling the book rights based on the current screenplay.

Additional casting announcements will be forthcoming. "We are still in negotiations with several other Hollywood actors that will propel this movie to new heights including James Caan (Godfather, Marcy, Elf, Get Smart) for the role of Angelo, Vinny's father, and Jamie Lynn Sigler, who most notably played Meadow on HBO's The Soprano's, to play Vinny's long time girlfriend. Sigler's other projects include Entourage and Homie Spumoni, in which she worked with "Paz" writer/director Glenn Ciano.

Short Short Story Film Festival Comes to Providence

Thanksgiving Weekend:
MergingArts Productions will present the third annual Short Short Story Film Festival on Saturday, November 28th at The Cable Car Cinema and Café at 204 South Main Street in Providence, RI, highlighting films of five minutes or less in length, all of which tell a story.

The films include both live-action and animated pieces from North America, Europe, and Australia.

The festival features two sets of nineteen films, the first being what the organizers call the “Heartstrings Program,” showing at 1:00 pm and 7:00 pm, consisting of films of a sentimental nature – tragic, comic, romantic, or a mix of the three.

The second program is the “Headtrip Program,” which screens at 3:00 pm and 9:00 pm, and presents more off-center films, with black comedies and horror well represented, along with many films that don’t pigeonhole easily – experimental in flavor, but still having a story.

The festival includes a 5:00 pm reception with Phil Goldman and participants in his Live Bait short storytelling series, with DJ Madame B mixing soundscapes between stories.

Rolfe Square Storefronts Receive the Gift of Redesign This Holiday Season

Cranston, RI – Rolfe Square needs some flair, and Artists’ Exchange aims to give it just that. Located in the center of the state, the city of Cranston unites innerstate travelers from surrounding towns on a daily basis. Several neighborhoods within the city have unique identities, from waterfront Pawtuxet Village with its quaint shops and eateries and the annual historic Gaspee Days celebration, Knightsville, home of the annual Saint Mary’s Feast, and Garden City, the local mecca of higher end suburban retail, with the developing Chapel View complex only adding interest. While Rolfe Square sits at the center of the city, flanked by one of the state’s largest high schools and Cranston City Hall, the city’s nucleus has long been neglected.

Recent years have seen many Rolfe Square businesses shut their doors for good, and the constantly-under-construction Park Theatre only added to the depressed look of the neighborhood. However, things are starting to look up. The recent reopening of the Park Theatre, now known as RICPA, Rhode Island Center for the Performing Arts, marks the first major step in the turnaround of Rolfe Square. And Artists’ Exchange has big plans to keep the momentum going. On Saturday, December 5th, during the 5th annual Gingerbread House Decorating Contest and Artisan Fair, Artists’ Exchange will unveil six redesigned storefronts of Rolfe Square businesses. This is one of many stages in a long-term revitalization plan for the neighborhood, developed and led by Elaine McKenna-Yeaw, Director of Artists’ Exchange.

With ethnic food spots growing in numbers, staples such as Ruth’s Lingerie, Betty’s Candies, Durfee’s Hardware and King’s Garden, and Artists’ Exchange steadily gaining a reputation as a community arts hub, Rolfe Square has clear potential to offer its own unique draw, and to restore a sense of pride and identity to the neighborhood. Yeaw has big plans for revitalizing the area, with the ultimate goal of Rolfe Square being known as an arts district. With RICPA acting as the anchor, Yeaw is confident that this dream can become a reality.

To begin the feat of revitalization, Yeaw sought out the help of an expert. Architect and RISD Assistant Professor Hansy Better Barraza, who specializes in Main Street design, has been leading her fabrication students in a semester-long redesign effort of Rolfe Square storefronts. Cooperating businesses include Ruth's Lingerie, Park Senate Barber Salon, Betty's Candies, Cranston Chamber of Commerce, Artists' Exchange and Citizens' Bank.

Yeaw says “the idea is to utilize beautiful, existing historic storefront windows to promote these businesses, using design that creates a ‘wow’ factor. The goal is for the window displays to change each semester, giving Rolfe Square the ‘something to see’ reputation.” Yeaw is confident that interesting art pieces and displays will help to revitalize historic Rolfe Square, while giving RISD students practical experience with project development from concept to installation.

Other recent revitalization efforts include an Artists’ Exchange window installation by a RISD illustration student volunteer this past summer and the now annual Fall Out of Summer Arts Festival in September. Next year’s festival will kick off with an arts parade to involve even more of the community in reclaiming a sense of pride in their neighborhood. Future street revitalization plans will potentially involve sculptural installation on sign poles, lighting design and street art such as furniture, trash bins and tree guards.

Help NOW to Keep Film in Rhode Island

Dear Friends of Rhode Island Film & Television Production,

For the last five years, we've worked hard to bring an unprecedented amount of film and television production here to our Ocean State, while providing many new opportunities for students, crew, vendors, talent, location owners and film festivals. A few examples of the productions we've hosted include three seasons of the Peabody award winning Showtime series BROTHERHOOD, the People's Choice best comedy 27 DRESSES starring Katherine Heigl, Steve Carell's DAN IN REAL LIFE, the Richard Gere family film, HACHIKO, Walt Disney's UNDERDOG, as well as EVENING, TELL TALE, TANNER HALL, HOUSE RULES, THE CLIQUE and many more. We are currently hopeful for the future of film and television in Rhode Island as we strive diligently to bring more productions home and anticipate an active year ahead.

Once again, we need your help!

With our state's current fiscal challenges, it is essential we receive feedback from individuals and companies that have been positively impacted by the film and television productions, and, more importantly, by the overall impact of the Motion Picture Incentive Program. Notwithstanding the slowdown of growth due to the recently enacted "cap" on the tax credit program, we are interested in how the Motion Picture Incentive Program has helped you and/or your business in the last five years.

For example, if you are a crew member, how many productions did you work on in the past five years in Rhode Island and what was the economic impact to you personally? Did your work in the film industry positively affect your personal/family life? Were you able to spend more time at home rather than travel out of state to practice your craft? Were you able to buy a home or start a new business? Did you receive health insurance? If you are a business/vendor, has your income grown as a direct result of having Hollywood set up shop here? Did you hire additional personnel or increase hours for your current staff? Were you able to save a job? How much did your company earn by providing goods and/or services to productions in Rhode Island? Most importantly, would you like to see additional productions filmed in Rhode Island?

This information is crucial to the survival of the Motion Picture Incentive Program. If the program has had a positive impact on YOUR life or business, please take a moment to send us a one-page written testimonial by Friday, November 20, 2009. Attached is a copy of a letter we received from one of our local vendors which you can use as an example. We look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for your time.

A RIIFF Creative Impulse Award Competition
www.7DayPSA.org

The Rhode Island International Film Festival Announces the Beginning of a New National Filmmaking Competition.

The 7DAYPSA is a week long competition, where teams (called “Agencies”) beat the clock to produce three broadcast quality versions (20, 30 & 60 seconds) of a single public service announcement for the deserving local not-for-profit organization (called “Clients”) that the Agency teams have randomly drawn at the start of the competition. Multiple “Clients” will have PSA’s produced and several “Agency” teams will be producing for the same “Client” organization. Each “Agency” will have seven days to go from concept to completion. For the Agency teams, this will be a writing challenge, a shooting challenge, and an editing challenge. The object is to get as many completed professional broadcast quality public service announcements for the clients to choose from as possible. The seven day period allows for this, as well as for the opportunity for media and marketing classes to use the competition as a teaching tool during the school week.

The “Seven Day PSA” Competition (7DAYPSA) was conceived by Duncan B. Putney, an Emmy winning writer and the creative producer of Original Concept & Development Associates (www.OCDA.biz). This national competition has been created for the non-profit Flicker’s Art Collaborative/Rhode Island International Film Festival’s Creative Impulse Award brand (www.Film-Festival.org). The purpose of this new type of competition is to challenge local filmmakers to use their skills and energy to meet a major need of local non-profit organizations, giving the filmmakers not only a great experience and a good feeling, but also a broadcast credit for their resumes. In an economic climate when deserving non-profit organizations are struggling for resources to operate, they do not have the funds to produce a broadcast quality public service announcement to raise awareness of their organization. It is this current lack of public awareness that impacts both their ability to raise funds and to make the public aware of their services. Media outlets that had once been able to both produce and air public service announcements for free, no longer have the available production resources or personnel to produce those PSA’s. But there is a resource that is going untapped. Local independent filmmakers have the skills to produce original and imaginative short films and are looking to garner professional credits for their resumes. The 7DAYPSA competition will bring filmmakers and not-for-profits together to provide these deserving organizations with a broadcast quality PSA and also a commitment from local media outlets to air the spots. This is a real feel good competition. Additional competition cities will be announced in January and the winners of each local “Best 7DAYPSA” will compete for a “National Best 7DAYPSA.” In addition, each PSA chosen for broadcast will be eligible for submission by the 7DAYPSA for awards such as Emmy and Telly Awards.

“Short Short Story Film Festival Comes to Providence Thanksgiving Weekend”

MergingArts Productions will present the third annual Short Short Story Film Festival on Saturday, November 28th at The Cable Car Cinema

and Café at 204 South Main Street in Providence, RI, highlighting films of five minutes or less in length, all of which tell a story.

Make the best short film, in New London, in just four days.

Neff Productions, in association with SECT Film, The City of New London and the New London Film Commission, are proud to announce the first filmmaking competition in New London. This competition is being put on for filmmakers, both local an non, as a primer for larger film competitions and film-related events in the near future.
The concept is simple.

Film teams have four days to script, shoot, edit and score a short film with a running time between 4 - 7 minutes, all within a four day period, after receiving the criteria for their their films, including a random genre, a prop that must be used, a character's name and a line of dialogue, all of which must be used in the film produced.

Film team members all must be volunteers, and the tasks allowed before the contest is the assembling of crew and actors, the securing of equipment and the scouting/securing of locations. All creative work will take place in the four days allotted.

The information for this project is extensive and can be gotten by emailing a request to bj@neffproductions.com, or by stopping in the office of Neff Productions at 2 State Street, New London, CT (right over Zavala's Mexican Restaurant).
A brief summary of the rules and regulations of this competition are as follows:

The registration fee per team is $50.
A $$$ cash award $$$ will be given to the winning film.

Pre-registered film teams (of no specific number of team members), or a representative of, will convene at the Bean & Leaf, located on 13 Washington Street, New London, CT, on Friday, November 20th beginning at 7pm to draw a random genre and receive all the other criteria for their films. After that the process begins.

All footage must be shot in New London. The City of New London will issue a blanket permit for filmmakers to shoot in town. We ask film teams to be as cooperative, respectful and as unobtrusive as they can manage.

Filmmakers must own the rights to all footage, music and related media used in any film. No previously shot footage can be used.
All production/post-production ends at 7pm on Tuesday, November 24th.

Deliverables (completed DVD screener copies and related wrap-up paperwork) must be delivered to the Neff Productions office by no later than 7:30p on Tuesday, November 24th. Films submitted after 7:30p will not qualify for the competition.

The films will be reviewed by a panel of judges and screened at a reception and party at the Bean & Leaf on Wednesday, November 25th. Awards will be given.

Once again, above was an abbreviated summary of the competition. All interested filmmakers should email bj@neffproductions.com or call 860.443.3786 for answers to any questions or to have registration paperwork and guidelines emailed to them.

New London has always been a multi-disciplined town regarding its artistic pursuits. Its art, music, poetry and theater scenes have had their share in the limelight, and have thrived. Filmmaking is a relatively new wave of creative expression, and for those filmmakers in the area, and those outside of it, here's an opportunity to show everyone what you've got.
