FILMMAKERS SEEK NEWPORT FOOTAGE

Oct. 1, 2009
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

NEWPORT –– The makers of BEHIND THE HEDGEROW: Eileen Slocum and the Meaning of Newport Society, are seeking film and video footage -- and also still photographs -- for possible use in their one-hour documentary, which will premiere next summer and be broadcast on PBS.

“We are particularly interested in any footage or stills of the late Eileen Slocum,” said G. Wayne Miller, producer and writer. “While we have been lucky to find a wealth of other material about Eileen, we’ve had less luck in home or professional films or video in which she appears.”

Slocum was prominent in Republican politics, and the filmmakers hope that someone over the years filmed her at GOP events or any other functions. The Slocum family, which is cooperating with Miller and director Dave Bettencourt, has so far been unable to find significant footage.

Any film format, from 8mm to video, would be useful.

Anyone who may be willing to help is asked to email the filmmakers at eaglepeakmedia@yahoo.com or write to Eagle Peak Media, 25 Puritan Drive, Warwick, R.I. 02888. Footage must be owned by those providing it, and owners must be willing to provide written permission for use. Contributors will be credited in the movie.

BEHIND THE HEDGEROW is the second title from Miller and Bettencourt’s non-profit Eagle Peak Media production company. ON THE LAKE, Eagle Peak’s first title, premiered in February to critical acclaim. PBS broadcasts in major national markets began in March and continue today. The DVD has recently been released.

Plymouth Rock Studios Announces $550m Loan to Start Construction

September 24, 2009 12:00 PM
By Christine Legere, Globe Correspondent

A team of California film executives, who came to Plymouth two years ago with a plan to build the first full-fledged production studio on the East Coast, is ready to make good on that promise.

Plymouth Rock Studios announced today that it has secured a $550 million construction loan from an international lender in Florida, Prosperity International LLC.

Prosperity International, a multi-billion-dollar firm based in Orlando, Fla., has been involved in projects across the globe, including the Caribbean, Europe, Western and South Africa, Latin America and the United States.

Sometimes the company arranges financing for large infrastructure projects. In the case of the studio project, Prosperity International will be the direct lender. The first payment to Plymouth Rock is set for November.

With money in hand, the studio company’s next step is purchase of the Waverly Oaks Golf Course, the 240-acre target site that carries a price tag of $16.5 million. The deal is set to close in November, about the same time construction on a $50 million access road to the facility will get underway. Studio construction will begin in earnest in the spring and the facility will open for business in the spring of 2012.

The studio complex will consist of 14 sound stages, a 10-acre back lot, production and post-production facilities, a theater and amenity village. Planners also expect to give a ground lease for some major hotel there. The facility will allow producers to make movies and television shows from start to finish, right on site -- something never before possible on the East Coast.

“I think it speaks to the strength and vision David Kirkpatrick and Earl Lestz put together,” said Plymouth Rock’s real estate partner Bill Wynne of the two top company officials who came up with the studio plan. “This is a seriously large deal in a terrible economy.”

While Plymouth Rock officials had thought the project might have to be built in phases, they now plan to construct the entire complex, including 1.3 million square feet of building space, over two years. The educational facility will be the only component notready for the opening.

Plymouth Rock has spent about $11 million to date on engineering studies and plans needed to secure local permits as well as on material required for its 1,000-page environmental impact study.

Before construction on the studio can begin, the state must sign off on the impact report submitted by Plymouth Rock officials on Sept. 15. The public comment period on the EIR will close Oct. 30. Wynne hopes state environmental officials will approve the report before the end of this year.

While the local Planning Board has already signed off on a so-called “master site plan” for the project, more specific information on each of its components will be required as building moves forward.

“This whole project is going to come to life in the next month,” Wynne said. “We obviously had to focus on the capital. Now that we have access to the money, we can start to implement the visions, goals and dreams we’ve talked about.”

The studio will also be LEED-certified, keeping its carbon footprint to a minimum. Plymouth Rock has estimated the studio will create over 2,000 high-income jobs and promises to provide “the infrastructure for sustained growth of the entertainment industry in New England.”

TV SERIES "EASTWICK" FILMS IN RHODE ISLAND

The Rhode Island Film & TV Office is pleased to announce that the new Warner Bros. Television series EASTWICK has filmed location shots and will continue to shoot additional location footage throughout Rhode Island for the upcoming season.

The first of these images will be seen on tonight's premiere episode at 10pm on ABC.

EASTWICK is loosely based on the John Updike novel and popular feature film "The Witches of Eastwick". The new series stars Rebecca Romijn, Jaime Ray Newman and Lindsay Price as the three young witches who come into their power when a mysterious man, Darryl Van Horne, played by Paul Gross, comes to town.

The series was developed for television and is executive produced by Maggie Friedman ("Once and Again"). David S. Rosenthal ("Gilmore Girls") also executive produces. Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Film & Television Office, stated, "This wonderful news is the result of hard work and a positive working relationship developed over the last few years between the State of Rhode Island and both ABC and Warner Brothers. We are grateful that the creators of this exciting series appreciate the Ocean State's natural beauty and unique architecture. Film: KILL EVERYONE

KILL EVERYONE (a comedy/horror) is a modern day 80's style "slasher" film which mocks the genre as a whole, making you laugh one minute and then scaring you the next. Kill Everyone was filmed exclusively in the state of Rhode Island in the cities of North Kingstown, Warwick, and Pawtucket throughout the summer of 2009.

KILL EVERYONE: Jerry Hill, a deceitful and corrupt film professor who uses his students to make trashy and distasteful horror movies for his own profit, escorts his students to a cabin deep in the woods of Maine to shoot the film “Killer in the Woods”. There they find what was thought to be only a legend is in fact true as the killer in the woods sets out to KILL EVERYONE!!!

KILL EVERYONE introduces a new, young and fresh cast to the southern New England indie film scene. Each character was carefully crafted to fit just about every type of personality for a great mix of humor. Follow these students and their film professor as they venture deep into the woods of Maine to shoot a mocumentary of the legend, “Killer in the Woods”.

THE LEGEND: “Killer in the Woods” is a legend of a serial killer back in the mid 80’s, forced to hide in exile deep in the wilderness. After finding a deserted cabin outside the small town of Fryeburg and claiming it home, he begins to adapt back into society. With the urge to kill still boiling within his blood and the lack victims coming across his path, he sets out to find a new way to attract fresh meat.
His new way is internet blogging on a social network site called my-buddy-space.com where he lures his audience in and finishes them off.

KILL EVERYONE is the 1st feature film produced by AnyTek productions, Richard Tobin Jr. and Michael Vallier II and shot completely in Rhode Island. Although this is their first feature film, filmmaking is not new to these two. Together they have been working close for the past 5 years on many short films, music videos and various projects for local clients.

RICHARD TOBIN JR., Creator, Director and Co-Producer of Kill Everyone, has been an avid horror enthusiast since seeing “Night of The Living Dead” on late night television. His knowledge and love of the horror genre inspired him to write his own scripts including Zombie University which ran on the RI Public access cable channel for two years starting in 2005. Richard has also appeared in several locally
produced independent films such as Hecatomb and The Visitor as well as being a featured extra in two episodes of the Showtime series The Brotherhood.

MICHAEL VALLIER II, a US Army and Iraq War veteran, Producer and Co-Director of Kill Everyone has been making films for the past 8 years. While studding video production at New England Tech in Warwick, RI, Michael was running a fulltime production company, “Moon Drop Studios LLC” and getting a jump start in his career. He then spent a full year working in Washington, DC for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) as a Producer and Director for internal agency productions. He now primarily resides in Frankfurt Germany which expands AnyTek Productions to be a world wide production company.

KILL EVERYONE world premiere will be held at the Orpheum Theater in Foxboro, MA on November 6th 2009 at 6:00pm and is a part of New England’s newest horror themed film festival “Killer Film Fest” which is also created by Michael Vallier II and Richard Tobin Jr.

Cranston, RI –Artists’ Exchange will proudly present the 2nd annual Fall Out of Summer Festival on Sunday, September 20, 2009.

The event will feature live music, theater performances, art activities and contests, food and artisan vendors, pony rides, the unveiling of a summer camp art installation, and more. The festivities begin at 11am and will end at dusk. Admission is free.

The goal of the event is two-fold: to continue towards a long-term goal of revitalizing the Rolfe Square community and to raise much needed funds to help Artists' Exchange continue to offer a lively and enriching calendar of events and classes to the public.

Artisans will be showcasing a variety of wares, jewelry, pottery, fine art and more.

The performance line-up will include live music and theater, including a fully-costumed Marley promoting this year’s “A Christmas Carol,” an annual award-winning Black Box Theatre tradition scheduled to run in mid-December. There will be a Black Box Theatre booth designated for audition sign-ups and sales of tickets to “A Christmas Carol.” This year’s production will take the stage not only in the Black Box Theatre, but will also be transformed for one evening into a full scale production on the stage at soon to open Park Theatre. Reservations can also be made for this special show at the festival.

Attendees will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of hands-on activities and art contests, as well as a raffle, with prizes including handcrafted items donated by participating artisans. Art activities include a Human Art Contest, where participants are invited to use a variety of materials to decorate themselves into a walking piece of art. Attendees are also invited to participate in a Street Art Contest, armed with colored chalk, a section of pavement and the potential for limitless creativity. Entries for both contests will be judged by festival attendees and winners will receive a prize. Newly added this year are a selection of original and artsified carnival style games, including Pin the Eyeball on Picasso, Escher Tessellation Toss, Paint(can)ball, Manic Hat Fling and a Dinosaur Dig for younger children. Also new this year is a Make Your Own Ice Cream Sundae Party inside the Artists’ Exchange café. A Bananagrams table will be set up again this year for the delight of word lovers, with personal Bananagrams pouches available for purchase.

A free kids’ area, the “Kids’ Studio,” will include activities such as a still life set-up with drawing boards and colored pencils available for small artists to create, explore and discover.

Betty’s Candies will be open during the festival, with face painting available outside the store on Rolfe Square, while selections from Artists’ Exchange’s own pottery and jewelry line, Cheeky Kiwi, will also be showcased for sale on the sidewalk in front of the Artists’ Exchange boutique.

A 20% discount will also be offered on all fall class registrations processed during the event. The next session of Artists’ Exchange classes begins the week of October 5th.

Live musical performers will be featured on two stages. Performers include Lori LaCaille, Eric French and Mr. Hyde, Michelle Ribeiro, West Eddy Trio, Global Crash and Jacqueline Bartlett, Dacoda, Smokin' Mirrors, Not For Nuthin', Wal Man, Freek Freelie, Liam Dailey and the Glass Jars and Rick Drost.

Lori Lacaille has been live on the New England music scene for over 30 years, as a member of Ken Lyon and The Tombstone Blues Band, the popular folk duo “Prizm” with Betsy Listenfelt, a 6 piece band called “Jade,” and all along as a solo artist. As of late, one might also find Lori running a weekly “Open Mic Night” in Greenville, RI at The Mill. She has established herself not only as a versatile musician, but also a top engineer and producer of both audio and video with her recording studio and production company, Wolf Bear Productions.

Based in Providence, Eric French & Mr. Hyde is an unapologetic, rock ‘n’ blues bombast set off by a powerfully introspective acoustic streak. Whether as a lean, explosive three piece or alone with an acoustic guitar, EFMH delivers an intuitive examination of human nature; and someone who just woke up in their underwear without a #2 pencil.

Originally from the South, and inspired by the gospel, bluegrass, rock and country of her childhood, singer and songwriter Michelle Ribeiro gained considerable attention in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region. While her own compositions stand out in a wide-ranging repertoire, Ribeiro’s soft-edgy voice lends itself to the songs of the artists whose work she favors and which have influenced her own. Ribeiro takes pride in performing for events with purpose. “I write songs that have meaning to me, and hopefully touch something inside of others. I believe that all people have a purpose, and have something positive to give to the world.”

West-Eddy Trio was formed in the summer of 2005. Melding the essence of 60’s stoner rock, 70’s classic rock, and such diverse musical influences as Susan Tedeschi, System Of A Down, Janis Joplin, Tool, David Rawlings, Grace Slick, Jewel, and Cream (to name a few), The West-Eddy Trio combines the very best of acoustic rock, blues, folk metal and originals while entertaining audiences with their sincerity and power.

Dabbling in ambient, house, big beat, trance and electro Global Crash blurs the lines of all techno and electronic music, not being satisfied with just one subgenre of the genre. Global Crash, the brainchild of Paul Holder, is “at once both music to make you wanna dance, and music to make you contemplate the meaning of existence.”

Jacqueline Bartlett is a singer/songwriter from Hope, Rhode Island. She plays original folk music with a blend of traditional and alternative music. Bartlett also plays acoustic guitar and mountain dulcimer. The poetic & symbolic style of her music evokes, to the listener, a similar sense of life's journey.

Additional performances include an outdoor weapons and combat demo from Mastery Martial Arts, a dog performance presented by Celie Kennels and a performance by A Rose Productions of the children's play "Love's Labours Found," an improv comedy performance by Sky Punch (recently named finalists in the Providence Improv Fest) and Black Box Theatre children's theatre games. Pottery wheel throwing demonstrations will also take place throughout the festival.

The summer camp art installation, conceptualized and assembled by Dorothea Ulrich, a summer intern from RISD, includes contributions from every child who attended art camp this summer at Artists’ Exchange. The finished design, which is in the shape of a giant ring, features eight different sections, each devoted to one of the eight weeks of themed summer art camps. The installation will be unveiled in the Artists’ Exchange gallery and will be available for viewing throughout the day.

Celie Kennels will also present a "Doggie Show Off Contest." Attendees are encouraged to enter their pride and joy in a number of categories including Best Dressed Dog, Most Artsy Dog, Best Doggie Trick, Most Humorous, Most Human-Like, Best Doggie/Owner Look-Alike Pair and the Tail Wagging Contest. "TANNER HALL" TO PREMIERE AT TORONTO FILM FEST

The Rhode Island Film & TV Office is pleased to announce that TANNER HALL, which filmed entirely in Rhode Island utilizing local crew and talent, will have its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday, September 14, 2009.

TANNER HALL was written and directed by Tatiana von Furstenberg and Francesca Gregorini and is based on their childhood experiences as boarding school students. The film is produced by Rhode Island resident Julie Snyder and features Brie Larson, Tom Everett Scott, Amy Sedaris and Chris Kattan in the ensemble cast.

Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Film & Television Office, praised the production, "We are extremely happy for filmmakers Tatiana von Furstenberg, Francesca Gregorini, Producer Julie Snyder, Executive Producer Richard L. Bready and the entire team of TANNER HALL. Due to their vision, dedication, and with the support of the Motion Picture Tax Credit program, this special film not only promotes our beautiful Ocean State; it is being recognized at the renowned Toronto International Film Festival. Once again, what started as a dream in little Rhode Island is now a real gift being showcased to a worldwide audience!"

Co-writer/Co-Director Tatiana von Furstenberg said, "Francesca and I have a very strong connection to Rhode Island as we met there while attending Brown University. It was so wonderful to be able to return to collaborate on our first film together and capture the unique locations, which could not have been more appropriate for TANNER HALL. It is our hope that the natural beauty of autumn in Rhode Island is captured in our film - our production took us deep into the orchards of Blackstone Valley and along the lakefront at Mishnok Barn. But home for the cast and crew was Providence... and everyone loved being there. This movie would not have been possible without the support and welcome that Rhode Island and the Film & TV Office gave us, and we are ever grateful. Rhode Island looks great on film!"

Added Producer Julie Snyder, "In many ways, Tanner Hall is a testament to Rhode Island filmmaking. I met our Executive Producer, Richard L. Bready, when we were both involved in starting the Newport International Film Festival. A true visionary, Rick also became my business mentor. While looking for film scripts to produce, I came across a wonderfully moving script co-written by Brown University graduates. Rhode Island has so many beautiful and naturally scenic locations and also offers a nurturing environment for first time filmmakers. I am so honored and excited to share what we produced in Rhode Island with the audiences at the Toronto International Film Festival, the largest and most prestigious film festival in North America."

the 10th Annual Pawtucket Film Festival

From ANTHONY AMBROSINO:
I'm writing to you to tell you about all the fun we have in store for you this year at the 10th Annual Pawtucket Film Festival. September 4th, 5th, 6th, and 11th, 12th, 13th.
We have a great mix of both local and national films presented in person by the filmmakers themselves. As always, all attendees of the festival receive a Bad-Ass limited edition festival t-shirt made exclusively by Mirror Image, Inc., complimentary refreshments provided by Raymond Norman Cooks!, Iggy's Bread, and the Boston Beer Company, and are treated to a rockin' intermission by some of the hottest musical acts in the Western World, and of course Henry the Horse dances the Waltz!
The best part of all is the low low economically responsible, artist friendly, even you can afford it price of $10. That's Food, Films, Drinks, and Music for 10 bucks. Did I mention the T-shirt? FREE!
We were so excited about celebrating our tenth year that we decided to invite the Alloy Orchestra to perform a live original score to the 1929 silent classic Man with the Movie Camera. A film that not only revolutionized the editing room but the art of cinema itself! Speaking of cinema revolution, we have invited a number of filmmakers from the RIFC to be a part of the festival this year, including Jacquie Schnabel, Nathan Quattrini, Mike Messier, Nicholas Beaubien, Stu Chudy, and Richard Griffin.
We are also proud to have Academy Award nominee and winner of the 2008 Grand Jury Prize at Sundance Frozen River as well as the 2009 Special Jury Award at South by Southwest winner The Way We Get By. For our complete schedule please visit www.pawtucketfilmfest.com.
