Artists' Exchange Production Reveals How Socrates Got His Groov(y) Back

Cranston, RI – The Artists' Exchange is pleased to welcome audiences to The Black Box Theatre for a psychedelically satirical theatre experience. A modern adaptation of Aristophanes' "The Clouds," a classic Greek comedy, will take the stage on September 11 with a flower-powered storm of philosophical probing.

Rich Morra, Artistic Director of The Artists' Exchange's Black Box Theatre, elected this fall's production as an opportunity to introduce his students to the study of classical theatre, while offering a modernized version of an age-old story to the theatre-going public.

Aristophanes' "The Clouds" centers around an old farmer, Strepsiades, a man from humble beginnings who bemoans the very costly horse-racing hobby of his son Pheidippides, which has left him penniless. In an effort to overcome this financial burden, Strepsiades enrolls his son in the Pondertorium, a school where Socrates teaches, and where Strepsiades hopes his son will learn the art of verbal argument to talk his way out of the debt he has accrued. As the conflict rises, a chorus of women, referred to as "the clouds" serve as moral guides to Strepsiades, giving and withholding rain as a consequence of his choices. What ensues is a satire of academia, poking fun at intellectualism and the beginnings of modern thought.

Morra saw immediate parallels between this clash of old and new school ideas and the conflict brought about by the revolution of the 1960's. For this reason, he decided to claim the decade of free love and free thinking as the setting of the play. Hippie attire and the melodies of popular songs of the 60's add a colorful backdrop to a theme that pervades history: new thinking often frightens people.

"The Clouds" will run September 11-13 and 18-20. All performances are scheduled for 7pm. Tickets are $15. For additional information or to make a reservation, please contact Christina Mealey at 401.490.9475.

Artists' Exchange Kicks Off New Annual Fundraiser

The Artists' Exchange Takes A Step Toward Revitalizing Rolfe Square.

Cranston, RI – The Artists' Exchange is pleased to present the first annual Fall Out of Summer (FOOS) Festival on Sunday, September 14, 2008. The event will feature live music, theatre, art activities and contests, food and artisan vendors, a summer camp art show, and a film screening at dusk. The festivities begin at 12pm and will end at approximately 10pm.

The goal of the event is two-fold: to take a long-awaited step toward revitalizing the Rolfe Square community and to raise much needed funds to help The Artists' Exchange continue to offer a lively and enriching calendar of events and classes to the public.

Artisans will be showcasing a variety of wares, from jewelry and pottery to handcrafted items made from reclaimed materials. Food vendors will represent local Cranston businesses and will offer a range of choices to satisfy any palate and appetite.

The performance line-up will include art demos, live music, dance and theatre, including excerpted scenes from The Black Box Theatre's production of Aristophanes' "The Clouds."

Attendees will be able to participate in a variety of hands-on activities and art contests, as well as a series of raffles. Discounts will also be offered on fall class registration.

At dusk, everyone is welcome to bring a lawn chair to watch a screening of the 1985 classic family adventure comedy "The Goonies."

Sponsors include Motif Magazine, Windmill Studios and the RIFC (Rhode Island Film Collaborative).

In the event of rain, the FOOS Festival will take place the following Sunday, September 21. For more information, contact Christina Mealey at 401.490.9475.

How to be Used as a SAG Actor for the 48 Hr. Event

This is an excerpt from an article written by Ellen Becker-Gray, explaining how SAG actors can be used for the 48hr:

We just spent an incredible weekend participating in this year's Providence 48 Hr. Film Project. Our film "Monte's Last Cut" was produced by Rob Gray, our Team Leader for Fanfaire Productions. I was the Director of a talented cast consisting solely of SAG actors. SAG members also served as part of our superb technical crew.
Often, I hear discussions and inquiries among actors about how to acquire speaking roles. I suggest becoming involved in a 48 Hour Film Project team, a valuable opportunity in which an actor can add a principle credit to his/her resume and gain experience in every aspect of the film-making process. In addition to adding to our education about our craft, the experience is just plain fun.

The 48-Hour Film Project is a national competition in which teams of filmmakers are assigned a genre, a character, a prop and a line of dialogue, and have 48 hours to create a short film containing those elements — from writing and shooting to editing and adding music. Filmmakers competed to create the best short film during 48 hours.

MEDIA COVERAGE of the 48hr WEEKEND

Some of you may have been lucky enough to see short clips of yourselves as you participated in last weekend's 48hr Film Event. We had great coverage both on television and in the papers. Thanks to all the outlets who covered us.
You can still read the print articles online at projo.com (search news stories), online at the Warwick Beacon: http://warwickonline.com/warwickonline/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=37949&Itemid=174

And if you can, search out a recent copy of MOTIF or Imagine Magazine.

SHOWTIME’S BROTHERHOOD BEGINS FILMING THIRD SEASON

Contact:

Steven Feinberg, Executive Director
Rhode Island Film & Television Office
One Capitol Hill, 3rd Floor
Providence, RI 02908

401-222-3018 FAX

The Rhode Island Film & Television Office is proud to announce that BROTHERHOOD, the critically acclaimed winner of a 2007 Peabody award, will commence photography for its third season on location in Rhode Island beginning Monday, July 28, 2008. The drama stars Jason Isaacs, Jason Clarke, Annabeth Gish and Fionnula Flanagan. It was created by Blake Masters and is Executive Produced by Mr. Masters, Henry Bromell and Elizabeth Stephen, and produced by Donna Bloom.

BROTHERHOOD is the first television series to be filmed entirely in the State of Rhode Island. The premium cable network has ordered eight more episodes to be shot on location in Providence and East Providence, as well as other towns and cities within the Ocean State.

Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of the Rhode Island Film & Television Office, welcomes the groundbreaking series Brotherhood back to the Ocean State, adding, “The return of Brotherhood will provide additional opportunities for our talented and dedicated local workforce. In the previous two seasons, Brotherhood has employed over 300 local, full-time crew members, and produced more than 225 speaking roles for local actors along with approximately 3,000 extra and walk-on roles. I would like to extend my gratitude to the Showtime executives, producers, cast and crew for making our beautiful state their location of choice.”

In January 2008, when Showtime announced Brotherhood would be returning to Rhode Island for a third season, several of our elected officials commented:

“The decision to film a third season of Brotherhood in Rhode Island is a tribute to a good story and a great place to tell it,” Governor Carcieri said. “Rhode Island is proud to welcome this project home, and the state Film and Television office should be credited for putting our state in front of the Hollywood decision makers.”

Speaker of the House William J. Murphy said, "It’s great news that Showtime has decided to shoot a third season of Brotherhood entirely in Rhode Island. The production was the first one to take advantage of the General Assembly's film and television tax credit legislation, which has been a tremendous success. We welcome them back to film more scenes in our House chamber and offices."

"It is exciting to have Showtime's Brotherhood back in Rhode Island for the filming of its third consecutive season," said President of the Senate Joseph A. Montalbano. "For two years Showtime has experienced the numerous benefits of filming in Rhode Island first hand, and it goes without saying that the on-location production has lent a significant authenticity to the program. Our state's small size and big beauty have made Rhode Island an attractive shooting location for multiple productions, both large and small, in the few short years since we adopted film tax incentives. We look forward to many more years of hosting Brotherhood and other productions here, which in turn will bring more jobs and other opportunities to all Rhode Islanders."

Providence Mayor David N. Cicilline remarked upon hearing the news, "I congratulate Blake Masters and the entire crew of Brotherhood for a great achievement in an incredibly competitive industry. Brotherhood is a tremendous source of good, steady jobs that pay well for our local actors and production professionals. It has been a pleasure to work closely with the Brotherhood team at every level of city government and we welcome them back for a third year."

The Rhode Island Film & Television Office recently hosted HACHIKO, starring award winners Richard Gere and Joan Allen; TELL-TALE, a thriller starring Josh Lucas and Brian Cox; and the Warner Brothers’/Tyra Banks film production of the best-selling book series THE CLIQUE.

The Rhode Island Film & TV Office is a division of The Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. For additional information on any of the past or current productions filming in Rhode Island, please visit our website at www.film.ri.gov.

Letter for Fighting Tax Credit Cuts

This comes from Ellen Becker-Gray who has helped fight the Tax Credit Cuts in RI and now is fighting them in MA too:

I never read the Herald, but someone sent me an article not favorable to our industry, so I responded. They published my Letter to the Editor.
"As a working actor, I must respond to Rep. Steven D’Amico’s latest assault on the film industry (“Hollywood East costly act,” June 28). What about the many local actors, production crews, food service people, electricians, florists, hotels, restaurants, tourist companies, real estate agents etc., who continue to benefit from the film industry’s venture into New England?
My husband and I lived in Massachusetts until we were cast in Showtime’s “Brotherhood,” a weekly TV show filmed in Rhode Island. I took early retirement as a teacher and continued my acting career as a Rhode Island resident.

Later, when Massachusetts offered its tax incentive, we found ourselves traveling between Massachusetts and Rhode Island. We spend much money in Massachusetts as do others in the industry. We stay in Bay State hotels, dine in restaurants and patronize stores and gas stations.

And we pay income taxes to your state, as do those “million dollar-plus salaries of wealthy movie stars and directors” to which D’Amico referred!"
- Ellen Becker-Gray,North Kingstown, R.I.

The 48 Hour Film Project Kickoff Review

Over 60 local performers help kick-off the Providence 48-Hour Film Project.

(PROVIDENCE, RI —June 25, 2008) - Monday night, June 23rd, actors, singers,
improvisers and the three little pigs all turned out in force to help
kick-off our state's most unusual film project, the Providence 48 Hour Film
Project, produced by the Rhode Island Film Collaborative. Filmmakers are
gearing up for the two-day extreme filmmaking competition, and they came
out in droves to find local talent for their teams.

The "Open Call" event, produced by AhtSpot.com, gave each performer a
chance on stage to show the crowd what they could do, as they would in an
audition. Any performer going over their two-minute countdown earned the
wrath of the ushers and was banished from the stage in a rain of Silly
String.

The event was held at the Tazza Cafe in downtown Providence. "It was
amazing to see the range of performers who turned out," said RIFC president
Mark Fogarty. "And the quality of performances was just outstanding as
well."

"It takes a special kind of person to get up in front of a screaming mob of
filmmakers and lose themselves in a performance for two minutes," adds
Daniel Lee White, founder of AhtSpot.com and organizer of the event. "It
was a remarkable collection of people who rose to the challenge, and I
can't wait to see what sort of films they create this year!"

"We even had a custom movie trailer for the event, put together by Dan
White," says Mike Ryan, who produces the Providence 48-Hour Film Project
together with David Splinter, both of the RIFC. "There was an impressive
collection of agents, casting professionals and filmmakers present as
well," adds Ryan. For more information about Ahtspot.com, its talent and
mission, go to www.ahtspot.com.

In addition to the performers, the crowd consisted of a few hundred
filmmakers, many of who will be participating in the 48-Hour Film Project
and were looking for talent to attach to their teams. So far, 40 teams have
signed on for the challenge - last year, a total of 48 teams, including
about 600 people, took part. This will be the project's third year in Rhode
Island.

To enter, team leaders should visit www.48hourfilm.com/providence - or
follow the links from the Rhode Island Film Collaborative site,
www.rifcfilms.com. The deadline to sign up a team is July 11th.

The Providence 48 Hour Project will take place July 18th - July 20th, with
the results screening at the Columbus Theater on Wednesday, July 24th and
Thursday, July 25th at the historic Columbus Theatre, on Broadway on
Federal Hill, Providence.

The 48-Hour Film Project is like no other film competition. At the starting
gun on Friday evening, a character, prop, a line of dialogue and a genre
are drawn from a hat - literally - for each team, and the filmmakers are
off. Each team has to work closely together to write, shoot, and edit a
short film from scratch, and race to get their final masterpiece in by 7:30
PM sharp on Sunday. Everyone on a team must be a volunteer, and although
some teams are fiercely competitive, many teams look at this as a chance to
have a high-octane get-together with friends. Team sizes vary from 1
person, to hundreds, with 10-12 people on average.

The 48-Hour Film Project had its start in Washington, DC in 2001, where 12
teams competed the first year. This year, it will visit over 70 cities
internationally with more than 2,000 teams competing to win the title of
"Best 48 Hour Film of 2008."

In-kind sponsors for this year's event include Motif Magazine, Two Sisters
Productions, and the Hilton Garden Inn Providence Airport/Warwick.

The project has been expanded to Providence with the sponsorship of the
Rhode Island Film Collaborative, the local non-profit group dedicated to
helping independent filmmakers network, learn and make films - filmmaking
