Black and White After Party Report

Closing out 2009 with a great big thank you!

It’s been two weeks since our annual fundraising event, and we wanted to thank everyone who braved the snow and came out to help us celebrate the season and make it a terrific party, from penguins to giant alien puppets, to all the people in between.

If the snow, the recent babysitter shortage, holiday conflicts or some other factor deterred you, it’s not too late to show support for this annual event or for the work RIFC does all year long. If you’d like to support us this season, please follow this link: www.rifcfilms.com/donate.aspx

Also remember that 48 Hour Film Project DVDs make great last minute Holiday gifts!! ( http://www.rifcfilms.com/shop.aspx )

Any support is greatly appreciated.

We’d also like to thank Vinnie Paz for coming out for the event with Glenn Ciano, director of the upcoming film “Paz.” We want to thank Steve Feinberg, Director of the Rhode Island Film and Television Office, Carol Patton of Imagine Magazine, Michelle Meek of New England Film, Anne Mulhall of LDI Casting, the Providence Roller Derby Grrls, Motif Magazine and the Providence Phoenix. Big thanks to performers BYOI and Big Nazo. Thanks also to State Senator Josh Miller and State Reps Eileen Naughton, and Michael Rice, and the many film professionals who turned out! Thank you all for supporting the arts.

You can see some photos of the event here: http://www.cathainfeld.com/photography/events/2009_RIFC_BnW
Special thanks to Cat Hainfeld for shooting them. If you weren’t there early, or you didn’t stay late, you may find some surprising images in here.

We also want to thank our incredibly generous volunteers, without whom the event could not have happened. These include, but are not limited to, our planning committee Raymond Norman, Rick Lataille, Michele Metivier, Michelle Lee Parenteau, Jay Walker, Mike Ryan, and volunteers Anthony Ambrosino, Debbie Condit, Nick Delmenico, Mark Fogarty, Kathy Knight, Laurel Oldham and Mary Paolino. Thanks also to Kerri Costa, Mary DeBerry Greg Gormley Joe Natale, John Raso, Rick Scianablo, Marcus Thomasand the staff of Kay Studios, Raymond Norman Cooks and WRIK Entertainment.

Last but not least, a big thanks to our sponsors:

Finally, in the category of lost and found, someone left a brown suede jacket at the party. Let us know if it’s yours. And thanks to people who offered tips on Moe the Penguin’s whereabouts. To set the record straight, Anthony Ambrosino did not actually abscond with a penguin – he simply gave a ride home to one of the fowl who had downed too many kippers. Alan Francis, similarly, had clearance for take off with one of our flightless fowl friends. And to the Polar Bandit who submitted ransom demands, we must request that you turn yourself in. We do not negotiate with kidnappers. We have no idea what we do with birdnappers. Penguins were and are available for modest donations.

A REMINDER FROM JAY WALKER & CO. SAVE THE DATE!:

Next Year's 48 Hour Film Project is only 7 months away!

For those of you already planning ahead, the dates for 2010 are July 16-18.

It's never too early to start gathering your crew and a possible cast together!

FILMMAKER NEEDS HOSPITAL SETTING:

This is Andrew Louis Marnik and I am currently in production of "Cold Brother," a 20-min short drama bring shot in and around Rhode Island.
I was curious to know if you guys have had any luck filming inside hospitals?
*
I have one scene that takes place in a patient's room that would be isolated, we wouldn't have to worry about HIPPA violations, etc. I just really need the bed and want to see a hallway through the doorway.
*
I've called many area hospitals and have gotten nowhere (even colleges to see if we can use their infirmaries).
Does anyone know of any smaller hospitals or a location that could accomodate that? I have a very very small budget, but would be willing to make a donation to the hospital's charity of choice if need be.

Thanks in advance,

Andrew Louis Marnik

The 48HFP Newsletter

Filmapalooza at NAB! All 48HFP Filmmakers are Invited!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The 5th Annual Filmapalooza-the finale festival for the 48 Hour Film Project is going to NAB Show in Las Vegas on April 10-12th, 2010. Here we will screen the best 48HFP films from 2009, announce the winners at our awards ceremony, and of course, party with fellow filmmakers.
This year all 48HFP filmmakers are invited to attend. The NAB Show is the world's largest electronic media show covering filmed entertainment and the development, management and delivery of content. Thanks to a special deal with NAB, tickets to Filmapalooza are only $25, which includes attendance at all 48 Hour Film Screenings, and entry to the NAB show floor. For more information, go to www.filmapalooza.org.
48HFP International Shootout: The World Ends
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
On the weekend of Dec. 4-7, 55 top 48HFP teams from around the world competed in the 48HFP International Shootout.

Their theme was the "End of the World". How the world ends was up to the filmmakers - natural disaster, disease, robot invasions, mass insanity or whatever other dire outcome the teams could dream up. As this was a special 48HFP event, filmmakers were not assigned genres, characters, props or lines, but were asked to include a local landmark. The winner will be announced at Filmapalooza at NAB.

New 48HFP Theme Song Contest Winner Announced!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During November we held a theme song contest, and were greeted by many great songs, from country ballads to raps to techno music. After careful consideration, the winner has been chosen! Patrick Tyrrell of L.A. won for his song "I Had a Cooler Weekend than You" [listen now]. For his effort, Patrick wins $1,000! According to Patrick, "The song is meant to convey that time spent pursuing your creative talents, even to a grueling degree, is infinitely more fulfilling than time spent any other way."
Patrick writes songs for films, so if you need some good music, check out his website at www.thatpatrick.com to hear more of his work.
Support Your Local Filmmakers
The Rhode Island Film & TV Office urges you to support your local independent filmmakers by attending showings of any or all of the following locally made films:
PREMIERE
MAILBOX FAIRY, 12/13/09 at 4:30PM & 8PM
The New Park Cinema, Cranston
The romantic comedy "Mailbox Fairy" takes place in Hope Island and is about a dork named Artie (Ryan Hanley) who doesn't have anything positive in life going for him. His everyday life consists of working at the diner as a bus boy, hanging out with his much younger friends, BeeBee (Gracie Rennick), Bobby (Andrew Cavanaugh), Brandon (Zack Turnquist) and Chu Chu (David Try) and wishing he was Lynn Nutmeg's boyfriend, who is the owner of the diner.
Artie lives with his grandmother (Mary Paolino), who is a Karate and Tae Kwon Do freak and is the only person Artie has to look up to. Grandma encourages Artie to chase after Lynn and not give up on her. Artie then discovers he has a magical talent. He can make beautiful and amazing mailboxes out of wood. This talent then leads him to this idea that by replacing the damaged mailboxes on Hope Island with new ones, he'll be mentioned in the newspaper and it will get Lynn's attention.
About the Film Maker: Panos Trikoulis wrote, produced and directed "Mailbox Fairy". He graduated from Johnston High School, the University of Hartford with a Mass Media Degree, the University of Richmond in London with a Communications Degree, and the New York Film Academy in Los Angeles with a Film Degree specializing in Directing and Cinematography. Panos then spent five years working on commercials, films (independent and features), soaps and television in Los Angeles and San Diego. Between 2008 and 2009 Panos, along with local film actors and crew, created the independent romantic comedy "Mailbox Fairy". For additional information contact him at www.Mailboxfilm.com or ptricks71@yahoo.com.
The premiere will be preceded by a red carpet event.
The Rhode Island International Film Festival Announces the Beginning of a New National Filmmaking Competition
7DAYPSA
A RIIFF Creative Impulse Award Competition
www.7daypsa.org
The "Seven Day PSA" Competition (7DAYPSA) was conceived by Duncan B. Putney, an Emmy winning writer and the creative producer of Original Concept & Development Associates (www.OCDA.biz).
This national competition has been created for the non-profit Rhode Island International Film Festival’s Creative Impulse Award (www.Film-Festival.org). The purpose of this new type of competition is to challenge local filmmakers to use their skills and energy to meet a major need of local non-profit organizations, giving the filmmakers not only a great experience and a good feeling, but also a broadcast credit for their resumes.
Andre Stark, the co-founder &Executive Producer of OCD Associates describes the idea as "Where competition and creativity meet community." Inan economic climate when deserving non-profit organizations are struggling for resources to operate, they do not have the funds to produce a broadcast quality public service announcement to raise awareness of their organization. It is this current lack of public awareness that impacts both their ability to raise funds and to make the public aware of their services. Media outlets that had once been able to both produce and air public service announcements for free, no longer have the available production resources or personnel to produce those PSA’s. But there is a resource that is going untapped.
Local independent filmmakers have the skills to produce original and imaginative short films and are looking to garner professional credits for their resumes.
The 7DAYPSA competition will bring filmmakers and not-for-profits together to provide these deserving organizations with a broadcast quality PSA and also a commitment from local media outlets to air the spots. This is a real feel good competition that has potential for great PR opportunities for our sponsors. At this time, our sponsors for the premier Providence event include: Cox Communications, CW-28, WJAR-TV-10, G Media,
Amped Graphic Design, OCD Associates, LDI Casting, Brooklyn Coffee Tea House, Nara Hookah Lounge, Comedy Connection Rhode Island, and the Rhode Island State Film & Television Office. We are actively seeking sponsors for both local competitions and on the national level. If any businesses are interested in sponsorship opportunity with national media exposure, they should contact Duncan Putney at the Rhode Island International Film Festival at 401-861-4445.
The 7DAYPSA will be a week long competition, where teams (called "Agencies") beat the clock to produce three broadcast quality versions (20, 30 & 60 seconds) of a single public service announcement for the deserving local not-for-profit organization (called "Clients") that the Agency teams have randomly drawn at the start of the competition. Multiple "Clients" will have PSA’s produced and several "Agency" teams will be producing for the same "Client" organization. Each "Agency" will have seven days to go from concept to completion. Duncan explains that, "for the Agency teams, this will be a writing challenge, a shooting challenge, and an editing challenge.
The object is to get as many completed professional broadcast quality public service announcements for our client organizations to choose from as possible. The seven day period allows for this, as well as for the opportunity for media and marketing classes to use the competition as a teaching tool during the school week." Interested filmmakers can get more information at www.7daypsa.org and filmmaking teams may sign up through January 10, 2010.
In talking about the future, Duncan is enthusiastic, "We will be expanding the competition beyond the initial incubator Providence event to other filmmaking communities across the country and we will be announcing those cities in January of 2010. So, each "Local Best 7DAYPSA" from those other cities will compete for a "National Best 7DAYPSA" award. In addition, after broadcast, winning PSA’s will be eligible for submission by the 7DAYPSAfor nominations for regional Emmy Awards, Telly Awards and others."
This premier competition will take place from January 28th to February 6th 2010 and is win, win, win, for Rhode Island’s non-profits, RI businesses, and the local filmmaking community. George Marshall, executive director of RIIFF comments that "We are very excited that this new and innovative Creative Image Award competition will have a national reach and impact that originates in Rhode Island."
