Exile Movies looking for Marketing Director for the feature-film smalltown

A small film production company is looking for help marketing the feature film "smalltown" as well as several other projects. From Exile Movies:

We are looking for creative, organized and driven people to collaborate with in trying to get this film out to the public.

This is an unpaid job, however, this could be a great opportunity for someone looking to break in to the film industry. The film was shot using the RED camera and has great potential for distribution.

The qualified person should have a sensibility which corresponds to the type of movie this is.  This is a darkly funny, twisted and brutal movie.  Think along the lines of films like True Romance, HappinessOldboyKickass, Sin City, FargoEscape From New York, Devil's Rejects, etc.    We are looking for someone who appreciates films of a similar style.

Here is a description of the film:

An action adventure mythic thriller set in a suburban wasteland, smalltown is a once-beautiful suburb ruined by poverty and devastated by corporate greed overrun by drugs, poverty, prostitution and violence. For years the town has lived under two warlords, the Druglord and the Pimp. A truce between these two fathers was born, and has kept the town at peace. But not for long. War is on its way to smalltown.

When Logan is caught trying to bring down the druglord and is sentenced to death, his girlfriend, Sasha, begs the town pimp, Logan's estranged brother Roarke, to help save him, offering herself to him. Sasha and Roarke race against the druglord's servants to save Logan and end the druglord's reign over smalltown.

In order to save Logan they must make their way through the town on foot, facing brutal gangsters, corrupt cops, desperate drug addicts, soulless teenagers and a hidden army of freaks, while Logan makes his way to the edge of town, haunted by the ghost of the girl he could not save, and hunted by the Druglord's men.

Part action thriller/ part social commentary with elements of comedy and horror, "smalltown" is a modern myth with echoes of The Warriors, The Odyssey, Lord of The Rings, Escape From New York, Sin City, Pulp Fiction and Casablanca.

Seeking Extras for Alternate Reality

We’re looking for extras for the latest grant-funded short film. This one is shooting in Providence at the Dark Lady, 124 snow St. (a block from PPac)

The shooting would be happening Saturday and/or Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm. If you can only make one day or the other, that’s ok. The film is about two alternate universes – so it can be a lot of fun to dress and act differently each day, but it's not required. We're looking for people who can fake sneeze and act drunk. All ages shapes and sizes are welcome.

This is non-union and non-paid, but food, credit and copy will be provided, and the piece will premiere on the big screen September 24th.

RSVP's help a lot - if you can make it, please send an email to this session's instructor, Kristin Lucas of Goldilocks Productions, here: goldilocks_productions@yahoo.com

Grant-Funded Filmmaking Class Aug. 24-Sept. 15

Instructor: Alec Asten

When you're looking to fund your filmmaking, don't forget about grants. Many public and non-profit initiatives exist to further a cause or champion a message. In this course, ten students will fulfill an existing grant to create a short film of their own design, from start to finish, with an experienced instructor to guide the way.

Our current mission is fully funded by a grant from the RI Department of Transportation. Each class will create one in a series of short films that aim to decrease drunk driving in 18-35 year old males. For each of several sessions, this grant provides full tuition reimbursement to ten students who complete the course, plus a production budget and a screening at the 2011 SENE Film Festival and a special screening event in September.

Students will also be featured in a co-documentary highlighting the mission-oriented impact of their filmmaking experience, which will be presented alongside the student shorts.

Each student will receive a dvd copy of the finished product and a certificate of completion.

We’re excited to announce the instructor for the next session will be experienced local video producer Alec Asten, founder of SECT.

Schedule:
Classes will meet on Tuesday and Thursday, August 24th through September 15th. There will also be a shooting weekend on Saturday, September 11th and Sunday, September 12th.

Locations will be in or near Providence, RI. Classes will be from 7pm to 10pm, except for the shoot, which is TBD.

Classes are limited to 10 students and are first-come first-served, so sign up early! This will be the final session covered under this grant.

BEHIND THE HEDGEROW OPENS R. I. INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

This comes to us from G. Wayne Miller:

PROVIDENCE, R.I. –– Tickets are now on sale for the World and Newport premieres of BEHIND THE HEDGEROW: Eileen Slocum and the Meaning of Newport Society, the exclusive and first-ever movie about the secret world of old-money aristocratic Newport and one of its -- and Rhode Island’s and America’s -- most prominent families.

Both premieres, which are presented by the 2010 FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival, will be followed by gala parties. Admission to these parties is included in the ticket price.

The World Premiere will be 7 p.m., Tuesday, Aug. 10, at the VMA Arts & Cultural Center, 1 Avenue of the Arts, Providence, R.I., 02903. This screening is the feature event of the opening night of the FLICKERS: Rhode Island International Film Festival. Tickets are $25, including the post-screening soirée.

The Newport premiere will be 2 p.m Aug. 14 at Bazarsky Hall, O’Hare Academic Center, Salve Regina University, Newport. Tickets are $30, including a post-screening High Tea hosted by members of the late Eileen Gillespie Slocum’s family on the grounds of Slocum’s Bellevue Avenue estate.

Online ticketing for both events is available at www.film-festival.org/index07A.htm or through the film site, www.BehindTheHedgerow.com Phone orders can be placed at 401-861-4445 or in person at the FLICKERS/RIIFF office, 83 Park Street, Suite, 1, Providence, RI 02903. Tickets will be sold at the doors but seating is limited, and advance orders are recommended.

Part history, part contemporary look, BEHIND THE HEDGEROW is told through the focus of Slocum, Newport’s last grand dame, who died in the summer of 2008. Slocum’s family has granted the filmmakers exclusive access to her archives and private Bellevue Avenue estate, where much of the film was shot over the last year.

The film features the on-camera appearances of several members of Newport Society, many of whom have never appeared on the screen before. The film is narrated by the late Eileen Slocum herself, through audio recordings made before her death. Slocum was not only Newport’s last grand dame –– she was a leading national Republican political figure for many years, a friend of both Presidents Bush, Presidents Reagan and Ford, and many others on both sides of the political spectrum. She was a descendant of prominent Rhode Islanders, including Roger Williams and the Browns of Brown University. These stories are told in the film in Eileen’s own words and appearances by several friends, including former Governor Bruce Sundlun and Hugh D. “Yusha” Auchincloss, stepbrother of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis.

BEHIND THE HEDGEROW is the second title from Eagle Peak Media, www.EaglePeakMedia.com, the production company founded in 2008 by writer/producer G. Wayne Miller and director David Bettencourt. ON THE LAKE: Life and Love in a Distant Place, its first title, premiered in February 2009 to critical acclaim. PBS broadcasts in major national markets began in March 2009 and continue today. ON THE LAKE was nominated for an Emmy by the New England chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. George T. Marshall, RIIFF Executive Director, is the executive producer of BEHIND THE HEDGEROW.

RIIFF Student Jury Recruitment:

This year, we are very pleased to announce that we are launching a new Student Film Jury program. This new program will offer local high school students the unique opportunity to participate directly in an internationally recognized film festival, as well as aid in the festival’s long-standing commitment to community outreach and education.

The student jury will be made up of a selected group of Rhode Island high school students who are entering their junior or senior year; though students who have graduated this year are also encouraged to apply.

Accepted applicants will become student jurors in the only OSCAR qualifying film festival in New England. The students will screen a selection of films (narrative, documentary, shorts), deliberate, and present the Student Jury Award, at the festival’s award ceremony. Students will also have the opportunity to meet with the various filmmakers, actors, and industry professionals from around the world, as well.

This program offers a terrific opportunity for high school students. It will not only make a great addition on the student's resumes and college applications, but it will also expose students to the very large entertainment industry, where they will have the chance to network and make contacts for their future.

The program will be accepting applications through July 19th, 2010. All applications will then be immediately reviewed and acceptance notifications will go out. The application and additional information will soon be up on the website, though anyone interested is encouraged to e-mail us now. This year's festival runs August 10th - 15th.
