ABOUT THE FILM

The Maiden Heist gives us the most endearing characters ever to commit grand larceny: three museum security guards who live lives of quiet captivation, each enraptured by a particular work of art.

Roger (Christopher Walken), Charles (Morgan Freeman) and George (William H. Macy) are each so lost in fascination with the particular objet d'art of his affection that although they have been coworkers for decades, they only just meet for the first time when crisis strikes: there's a new curator in town, and his plan is to change the museum's collection entirely, threatening to rob each man of his greatest secret passion in life.

However, having found their kindred spirits, the men forge a plan to hold onto the works of art they hold most dear. Though hardly criminal masterminds, their inflamed hearts drive them to plan and execute the most daring art heist ever conceived from the inside - with bumblingly hilarious results!

The Worcester Art Museum presents the benefit screening of The Maiden Heist, sponsored by Unum, with additional support from the Hanover Insurance Group Foundation. Media sponsorship provided by WSRS/WTAG.

Stage "Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992"

Cranston, RI – The Artists' Exchange announces upcoming performances of the Black Box Theatre Production of "Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992," a play by Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-nominated American actress and playwright, Anna Deavere Smith.

The 1992 LA riots, six days of mass looting, assault, arson and murder, serve as the play's subject. Through a series of monologues edited from actual interviews conducted by Smith, "Twilight" offers a kaleidoscopic and sympathetic rendering of differing viewpoints of people directly and indirectly affected by the riots, examining racial prejudice as the central focus, as the riots were triggered by the acquittal of four police officers involved in the infamous beating of Rodney King after a high-speed chase led by the black motorist.

Offering perspectives ranging from that of Reginald Denney, a white truck driver and victim of a violent riot-related beating to Cornel West, noted scholar, historian and Princeton Professor of African American Studies, Smith allows us the opportunity to examine the LA riots from a variety of angles, encouraging us to try to build a more complete picture of the actual incidents, as well as that of race relations as a whole.

With the recent election of the first African American president in America's history as a backdrop to the production, it is Artistic Director Rich Morra's hope that we might look back to these events as we continue to examine our nation's progress in terms of race relations.

Footage of the Rodney King beating and the riots will be projected behind the players in a multimedia production of Smith's play, placing the first hand accounts and commentary within their original context.

"Twilight" was originally produced as a one woman show that earned Smith the 1994 Tony Award nomination for Best Actress and Best Play. Morra has chosen to produce the play with an ensemble cast, in some cases with actors whose actual races differ from those of the characters they are playing. In reference to this choice of casting, Smith once said, "If only a man can speak for a man, a woman for a woman, a black person for all black people, then we once again inhibit the spirit of theater, which lives in the bridge that makes unlikely aspects seem connected. The bridge doesn't make them the same; it merely displays how two unlikely aspects are related. These relationships of the unlikely, these connections of things that don't fit together are crucial to American theater and culture if theater and culture plan to help us assemble our obvious differences."

"Twilight," as described by one of Smith's interview subjects, represents the transition between identifying with one's own race, and stepping into the light, or the wisdom of understanding others. It is Morra's aim that resurfacing this unique documentary theatre production will encourage audiences to do just that.

"Twilight: Los Angeles, 1992" will be performed in The Black Box Theatre at The Artists' Exchange on March 19-21, 26-28. All shows will take place at 7pm. Reservations are $15 and can be made by calling 401.490.9475.

New Coalition Forms to Support Film, TV and Digital Media Industry

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Contact:
Patrick Kinney
(860) 989-9549

Connecticut Production Coalition Launches with over 1000 members.

Stamford, CT – The Connecticut Production Coalition (CPC) was formally launched today with more than 1,000 companies and individuals who share a commitment to building a permanent film, television and digital media industry in Connecticut. The coalition will also be undertaking a campaign to urge state policymakers to support the film, TV and digital media tax credits that are fueling job growth and a rapidly expanding industry even amidst a worsening state economy.

“Connecticut is searching for ways to generate jobs, strengthen the economy and lessen its dependence on the crippled financial sector,” said Chris Campbell, Owner of Palace Digital Studio and one of the nineteen founders of CPC. “As one of the few growing industries in the state, film and digital media are key to that effort. This is why we’ve had such an astounding response to the launch of Connecticut Production Coalition.”

In just over two years, 91 film, TV and digital media productions have brought over $600 million in direct investment to Connecticut, resulting in an estimated $1.5 billion in new economic activity. These productions have taken more than 80,000 hotel rooms, paid for permits, rented homes, buildings and parking lots from property owners, spent money at hardware stores, printing shops, coffee shops, restaurants, dry cleaners, lumber yards, car rental agencies and many other businesses, large and small.

“It’s exciting,” said Kevin Segalla, President of Connecticut Film Center and a CPC founder, “This industry has taken root so quickly – it clearly will be an important part of the state’s future economy if it's cultivated by effective and forward-looking state economic development policies.”

On the digital media front, the tax credit has attracted Blue Sky Studios to move to the state, bringing over 300 high paying, high skill technology jobs. And in just the past six months there have been ongoing relocation discussions with a dozen other digital media companies (video games, visual effects, animation, etc.), representing thousands of potential permanent jobs for Connecticut.

“In addition to some major digital media companies eyeing Connecticut, in just the past week, two massive new studios have been announced,” said Segalla. “Not only will these projects bring direct production jobs, they will result in very significant employment in construction and other support industries.”

CPC will hold networking events, distribute quarterly newsletters, and act as an informational clearinghouse for the many individuals and businesses that serve the industry. Members will be able to share job opportunities, find local production resources, and follow the rapid growth of the Industry.

“We’ve gotten a real boost from our work on productions” said Ann Tupper, account manager for Office Furniture Rental Alliance in East Hartford and a new CPC member. “We’re a small business and like everyone else we’re concerned about the current economic mess. Now is the time to be building new industries, and not scaling back on programs that work.”

A. Searle Field, CEO of United Studios of America and a founder of CPC said that the coalition is actively supporting the state legislature’s review of the effectiveness of the tax credit. “There is no doubt that this industry is attracting permanent jobs and that the hundreds of millions of dollars in investment is having a very positive impact on the broader economy. While the film and digital media industry in our state is still young, it is growing rapidly and producing jobs and significant revenue for the state.”

“Thanks to Connecticut’s tax credit program, this industry is growing at break-neck speed,” said Chris Campbell, “It is critically important to keep in mind the positive impact the industry has on all types of businesses across the state.”

If you are interested in joining the Connecticut Production Coalition, please log on to http://www.productionct.com and join on the front page of the website.

CPC (www.productionct.com) is an independent private sector coalition of companies and individuals who care about establishing and growing a strong and robust film, television and digital media sector in Connecticut. CPC was founded by Howard Baldwin, Baldwin Entertainment Group; Karen Baldwin, Baldwin Entertainment Group; Chris Campbell, Palace Digital Studios; Tom Carruthers, Connecticut Film Festival; Ephraim Cohen, The Fortex Group; Brandon Curiel, Venan Entertainment, Inc.; Donna Elkinson, Elkinson + Sloves, Inc.; A.
