RIFC masthead
 March 28, 2011
Save the Film Tax credits!

Thank you for your support and testimony at the House Finance Committee Hearing regarding elimination of the Motion Picture Tax Incentive last week. However, there is more work to be done.

There will be a Senate Finance Committee Hearing to discuss the proposal at 2 PM ON TUES. 3/29/11 IN ROOM 211 OF THE STATE HOUSE. This will probably be the last opportunity to share your views.

If you feel the elimination of the Motion Picture Tax Incentive will have an impact on you, your business and/or family, you should attend this hearing to have your voice heard.

RI to host new Wes Anderson Film production!

Steven Feinberg, Executive Director of The Rhode Island Film & Television Office, is pleased to confirm that the critically acclaimed, Academy-award nominated director, Wes Anderson ("The Royal Tenenbaums", "The Fantastic Mr. Fox") will be making his next feature film, MOONRISE KINGDOM, in the Ocean State.

The stellar cast of MOONRISE KINGDOM is slated to include award-winning actors Bruce Willis, Ed Norton, Bill Murray, Tilda Swinton, Francis McDormand and Jason Schwartzman.

The esteemed director's last film, the animated feature "The Fantastic Mr. Fox" starring George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Bill Murray, garnered an Oscar nomination for best animated feature film in 2010.  The screenplay for MOONRISE KINGDOM is written by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola. Anderson will also produce, along with collaborators Scott Rudin, Steven Rales and Jeremy Dawson. Indian Paintbrush Productions will finance and produce the picture.

MOONRISE KINGDOM is scheduled to begin principal photography this spring in numerous locations around the state.

Film Office Executive Director Steven Feinberg said, "This is a spectacular moment in Rhode Island film history.  Wes Anderson is one of America's most unique cinematic storytellers of our day.  He not only brings his own artistic style to film; he also attracts a treasure trove of high profile talent to each production he works on.  This wonderful story, in particular, is whimsical, nostalgic and rich in atmosphere.  We are very pleased that our hard-working local crew, talent pool and exceptional Rhode Island locations will be given the opportunity to shine in a movie that will be seen by a world-wide audience."

 WIN WIN

Release:                                                 April 8, 2011

Directed by:                                             Tom McCarthy

Screenplay by:                                         Tom McCarthy

Story by:                                                  Tom McCarthy & Joe Tiboni

Produced by:                                           Mary Jane Skalski, Michael London, Lisa Maria Falcone, Tom McCarthy

Cast:                                                        Paul Giamatti, Bobby Cannavale, Amy Ryan, Jeffrey Tambor

Tom McCarthy, acclaimed writer/ director of THE VISITOR and THE STATION AGENT, explores the allegiances and bonds between unlikely characters with a lighter touch in his new film.  Struggling attorney Mike Flaherty (Paul Giamatti), who volunteers as a high school wrestling coach, secretly takes on the guardianship of an elderly client in an attempt to help keep his practice and his family afloat. When the client's teenage grandson runs away from home and shows up on his grandfather's doorstep, Mike's life is turned upside down.  A win-win arrangement turns into something much more complicated than he ever bargained for.  McCarthy's deft touch balancing drama and comedy, broken hearts and poignant humanity is at play in WIN WIN.

Screenwriting workshop at the Hotel Providence

April 16 & 17

Screenwriting differs from any other form of creative writing. In and of itself, a screenplay is not a finished product, but rather a highly structured idea for a completed film. Like an architect, a screenwriter holds the vision for a movie. Though the format and structure can be rigid, there is much freedom to be found in a screenplay. Screenwriting: The Art & Craft of Writing for Film will teach you to read and write screenplays with an emphasis on narrative work.
* This is not a RIFC workshop

Premiere "Disco Exorcist", Line producer, location and crew needed, Screenwriting class and Horror Group

RIFC masthead
 March 13, 2011
Premiere "The Disco Exorcist", March 19

After the sold out premiere, New England's unyielding kings of exploitation, Scorpio Film Releasing have set the next showing of their highly anticipated film THE DISCO EXORCIST for Saturday, March 19 at 11:00pm at the

Cable Car Cinema and Café in Providence Rhode Island. Twitch Film says that THE DISCO EXORCIST is "excruciatingly funny, genuinely harrowing at times and delivers on every promise that that killer trailer and excellent poster by Stephen Romano made."

THE DISCO EXORCIST is a movie steeped in that great 1970's Grindhouse tradition, with a dark horror story nuzzled snug in the seedy world of 70's Disco, porn, and drug Culture. It's at once funny, ominous, and unapologetically lurid. At the recently sold out premiere is Providence RI, the films director Richard Griffin heralded THE DISCO EXORCIST with the below introduction.

"When I was a child growing up in the 70s... and this was before we learned about movies from the internet ... I would scan the entertainment section of the Friday newspaper. There you would see ads for all the upcoming films. The main part of the page was covered in ads for all the big Hollywood films; Dog Day Afternoon, Jaws, Saturday Night Fever. Down the page you would see ads for the movies playing at the art house theaters... from the newest from Fellini to a John Waters revival. Finally down at the bottom of the page was the tiny, tiny ads for the porno movie theaters in town. Lurid artwork and titles. Well, being a rather precocious movie-loving kid, I would point to each ad and ask my mother about them. She would say, "Oh, that's a PG rated comedy. You can see that," or "That's a R-rated horror movie, you have to wait until you're older." Finally I would point to an ad for one of the "Adult" movies and she'd say.... "Oh, that's one of THOSE kind of movies"....

Well, I was -- of course -- intrigued. It was forbidden. Taboo. And for years I've waited to make "One of THOSE kind of movies...," and now with THE DISCO EXORCIST I've finally had my chance."

THE DISCO EXORCIST stars Michael Reed, Sarah Nicklin, Ruth Sullivan, Brandon Luis Aponte, Rich Tretheway, Gio Castellano, and Babette Bombshell as "Bernie Munghat". THE DISCO EXORCIST was directed by Richard Griffin, produced by Ted Marr, written by Tony Nunes and photographed by Jill Poisson.

THE DISCO EXORCIST is intended for mature audiences (in a matter of speaking) and nobody under 18 will be admitted into the theater. Down the road, the films producers hope to screen THE DISCO EXORCIST at some of the leading film fests around North America. For more information or to preorder tickets to the showings, visit the Scorpio Film Releasing website at www.scorpiofilmreleasing.net
