From THE RI ARTS LEARNING NETWORK:
CALL FOR ENTRIES: FILMS BY AREA YOUTH FILMMAKERS (14-18)

Below please find the guidelines and application for "Give Me Five"--the Arts Learning Network's first annual showcase of youth films from around Rhode Island. The event will be held at Hendricken High School in Warwick, on Saturday May 9, beginning at 1:30 PM. The films featured in the showcase will be from school and community media education programs statewide.

The focus of the event is media education, and each showcase film will be discussed with the youth filmmaker and professionals from the film industry. The event is free and open to the public. Donations of cash or canned goods will accepted. All cash donations will go to defray costs of the showcase. Canned goods will be donated to a food bank.

GIVE ME FIVE: Youth Film Showcase and Discussion with Professionals

CRITERIA FOR PARTICIPATION

* All school and community media education programs who have attended meetings of the Media Education Team of the Rhode Island Arts Learning Network are eligible to participate. Each school or community program may submit up to THREE pieces for consideration in the showcase.

* As part of the educational process, potential entries should be pre-judged by students at the school or community organization in order to choose the three submitted. In the event that we have more submissions than we have time for, the attached rubrics will be used to select the final films for the Give Me Five showcase.

* Preference will be given to pieces 5 minutes or less in length. Consideration may be given to pieces up to 10 minutes in length MAXIMUM, time allowing.

* The artistic and technical work on the piece must be created and executed by the students in the applicant’s media education program.

* Pieces submitted should have been created within the last year as part of a Rhode Island media education program represented in the Media Education Network.

* Each student whose work is submitted must be able to attend the entire Give Me Five showcase on May 9 if his or her work is selected.

ENTRY CATEGORIES:

Fiction and non-fiction entries are acceptable, including but not limited to the following categories:

Live Action (narrative, experimental, documentary, public service announcements, music videos)

Animation (stop-motion drawings, claymation, computer animation)

News Programs

Works-in-progress are acceptable and should be labeled as such.

Every attempt will be made to showcase all three applicant entries. Every school or program that applies will have at least one film screened at the showcase. However, in the event that there are too many entries for the time and space allotted, a panel of youth and adult judges will select the final showcase films. The panel may also select entries for showing on the Cox TV program Rhode Island Film or PBS. The panel will be composed of youth and adult artists, educators, and other professionals, and the enclosed rubric will be used. We also reserve the right to eliminate any entry that does not meet the basic quality standards. We acknowledge the Shortie Festival for the use of their rubrics in creating our own.

EVENT DEADLINES AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS:

1) All entries must be received no later than 4:30 PM on April 24th, 2009. All participants will be notified whether their selection will be part of the showcase. The entry must be accompanied by a signed entry form. The mailing address for the entries is: Give Me Five Film Showcase, RI State Council on the Arts, 1 Capitol Hill, Providence, RI 02908.
