The legendary Celebrity Club, Providence’s own Jazz and Rhythm & Blues Club is the subject of “Remembering The Celebrity Club” an event to be held at the Hi-Hat Club on Sunday, May 6th at 3:30pm. The Celebrity Club operated from 1949 until the early 60s.The event will include a performance by artists featured in the documentary currently being produced, many archival photos never seen before in public, clips from the film, and a panel discussion led by Rhode Island radio personality (and Celebrity Club MC) Steve Kass.
Filmmakers Norm Grant & Tom Shaker have spent over two years shooting interviews on the subject of jazz, blues and swing in the big band era and beyond in Rhode Island. The on-camera stories often deal with the rich musical culture in Rhode Island. Learn about the joys, disappointments and hardships of Rhode Island’s finest musicians. From tenor sax player Paul Gonsalves, to Celebrity Club owner Paul Filippi, find out what made the Rhode Island music scene such a rich treasure.
